1 Hole, 4 Hours!!!
Mark G - 17/10/08 at 07:31 PM

Hi all,

I've spent 2 nights this week trying to cut the hole in my side panel for my manifold. I have now done it but before I attach the panel for good I'd like your advice on how much room to give the between the manifold and the panel as I don't really want it to melt.

I know I'm close on the right hand side and underneath so I'll have to trim these bits anyway but do I need to worry about the rest of it?

I think its a bit tight as those pipes get bl**dy hot!

What he said. Love the shape but you need to give a bit more room

Sweet looking job there dude!!!!

remember you're engine will move about on the mountings too. not only will they melt the panel, they'll hit it too

I reckon another 10mm all the way round, apart from the left side.

i would give at least an inch from any pipe

I have something like 10 or 15mm between the pipe and the GRP and have never had any problems. My engine is rigidly bolted to the car though.

Thanks chaps, I'm going to try it with 10mm all round.

i have 10mm all round my manifold. it's more than sufficient.

one thing i would mention is can you take the manifold off without taking the engine out with a hole so tight? there's not many scenarios where you'd need to take the manifold off but if one arises, you'd wish you'd trimmed the hole a bit bigger.

No it won't come off without removing the engine but if I ever needed to I'd rather whip the engine out over having a gaping hole in the side panel.

I have 10mm round mine and all is OK

Cheers

Polyester is a thermosetting resin, it won't melt!
It will char, burn, split, crack, degrade and generally find anyway of getting rid of atoms other than carbon.
Looks pretty tight to me, when you go for an emmission test and have the thing running for hours on end, stationary....
