A Seriously flawed Driveshaft / gear change arrangement.
Not to mention that the silly transaxle would encroach on your ass/seat.
That thing makes an Escort seem Brilliant in comparison.

The 924s doesn't have the Audi engine, it got the early 944 2.5l straight six engine even so its only about 165bhp a big lump and thirsty.

Also spares and upgrades are expensive/rare making it an even more rubbish donor car

My mistake, straight 4.

The 924s had the 2.5 out of the 944. The earlier 924 had the 2.0 VW/Audi engine

924S

In 1984 VW decided to stop manufacturing the engine blocks used in the 2.0 924, leaving Porsche with a predicament. The 924 was considerably cheaper than its 944 stablemate, and dropping the model left Porsche without an affordable entry-level option. The decision was made to equip the narrower bodied 924 with a slightly detuned version of the 944's 163 bhp 2.5 litre straight four, upgrading the suspension but retaining the 924's early interior. The result was 1986's 150 bhp 924S. Porsche also decided to re-introduce the 924 to the American market with an initial price tag of under $20,000.
In 1988, the 924S' final year of production, power increased to 160 bhp (119 kW; 162 PS) matching that of the previous year's Le Mans spec cars and the base model 944 (itself detuned by 3 bhp (2 kW; 3 PS) for 1988). This was achieved using different pistons which raised the S' compression ratio from 9.7:1 to 10.2:1, the knock-on effect being an increase in the octane rating, up from 91 RON to 95. This made the 924S slightly faster than the base 944 due to its lighter weight and more aerodynamic body.
With unfavourable exchange rates in the late 1980s, Porsche decided to focus its efforts on its more upmarket models, dropping the 924S for 1989 and the base 944 later that same year.

924 is cracking fun, turns in well and just needs stiffer shocks to make it less rolly. I had hours of fun when I owned one and cheap to run, most of the spares came from GFS. The transaxle arrangement made for very good weight balance.

Wikipedia source ? I remember the launch it was definitely stated at that point the only other vehicle using the engine was the LT, Audi started using the engine about a year later. I remember the scorn poured on the 924 in the first few years of production, my reaction to it was it was the perfect replacement for the Sunbeam Alpine.

You are correct. It is the 2.5l straight 4. The mpg is around 28 combined and 34 on the motor ways. So not that thirsty. I have been driving this around since last August and have been putting £25 a week in for around 145 miles. The drive is fantastic and realistically it's more likely 150 bhp. But still pulls away from most traffic and plenty of power for over taking.
The interior has been fully replaced with custom seats so there is really nothing to do with the inside except for titivating. The paintwork has received many hrs of attention in the form of cutting and polishing . The engine runs sweet and is really only in need of a basic service. New tyres fitted recently on the rear.
This is a car that you could just jump into and enjoy
