Identify me a radiator please!
frodo_monkey - 27/4/09 at 08:30 PM

Gents,

My car's radiator is very much on its last legs and needs replacing. The car is a Stuart Taylor Locoblade and I think it is an Escort Mk2 rad but would like to make sure before I order!

The core measures 420mm across, 300mm height. Most of the Escort rad's I've found on t'internet seem to have a filler cap on top, so is this rad a bespoke ST item?

Regards,

Frodo

And yes, I know there is leak-fix plastic gack around the pipe in the top right of the first pic (thats why I need a new one)!

Yes that looks like a mk2 escort job to me, a friend of mine has one just like that fitted to his pop, he was looking for replacements and the originals are still quite easy to come by but there are also light weight double cored ally jobs available too if you shop around....

It looks bespoke, all MKII escorts had fillers in the expansion top, that looks like two bottoms on the core.

So if its not flacky in the middle fix it, copper rads are great to repair in this area.

Dig out all the goo around the leaky pipe, clean the the offending bits with a wire brush then plumbers solder, flux and careful with the blowtorch.

If that scares you any decent radiator repair shop should be able to sort for a fiver!

Regards Mark

I may well have that very rad in my garage. I have a look tommorow.

Gentlemen, you are (as ever) a font of knowledge! I think you've got a point about it being "double bottomed" as it were...

The core is definitely battered and bruised and has seen better days - not ideal for a race car that gets soundly thrashed whenever it runs

I think I might splash out and order a Radtec ally job at payday

Why don't you just recore the radiator you have? It usually costs about £60 and it will look like new and perform like new given the new core. No new brackets required either to suit another rad from a slightly different original application

Have you tried Adrad in Newcastle?

They will refurbish the existing unit for you.

Do you know, I hadn't considered that - great shout! I figure the repair and recore will be 1/3 of the price of an ali rad, which will definitely be a good thing...

I've seen AdRad on the internet, does anyone know of someone a little nearer (think York, Middlesbrough, Northallerton, Darlo) who can do it? Google is not being great...

Disregard my last!

Found Walkers Garage near Northallerton who can do it - seems like a good place to go if you want a bespoke rad/catch tank/intercooler etc made up!

You need decent end tanks to have it re-cored!

NOOOO! Don't go to Walkers. That way leads to lots of lovely Lancia Delta Integrale's, Lancia's lead to rust, rust leads to the dark side!
