More ebay skullduggery

I'm looking for a new smoker right now.

Found one that looked ok, stuck a bid in and lo and behold, I'm the highest bidder, but it's still low compared to general trends for the car in questions.

Twenty minutes later, a new bidder comes in, bumps it up by £20, but I'm still the high bidder.
Five minutes later, another £20 onto it, I'm still the high bidder.

At this point, I check out this new bidder's recent history, lo and behold he's bid on a few of the seller's items.
Game set and match, I'm being trotted up.

10 minutes later, he takes his bidding to £899 and I'm the high bidder at £900. Yeah, like £899 is a price you bid if you actually want to win the bidding...

What he doesn't know is that £900 was my self imposed cheeky low bid anyway. There's only one way he's going to find that out though...

Five mniutes later, he clearly can't contain himself any longer, in he goes with £920.

Bingo

Wrong move, you're now the winning bidder on your own car.

Happy bidding...

The only issue is that he can retract his bid, meaning that you will again be the highest bidder.

True.

Let's see, there's nothing on the telly anyway and the shed o' zil is too cold tonight.

Shill bidding is very illegal in Ebays rules........send them the details......

marcjagman - 27/1/10 at 07:55 PM

You can also retract your bid too

doddy - 27/1/10 at 07:57 PM

report him to ebay they come down hard on people doing this

55ant - 27/1/10 at 07:58 PM

hate to say it but now if im bidding i only ever bid in the last 3 seconds or so, i have had this happen to me far to many times. but yes as above send ebay the details.

bob tatt - 27/1/10 at 08:02 PM

two of my mates got banned from ebay for doing this took them ages to get back on as they were traced through there paypal accounts, the really silly thing was they were making decent money seling ex demo golf clubs so had no need to do it really only greed took over taught them a lesson.

That doesnt work. They usually have a mate bid up to close to the reserve or where they want it to be.

Liam - 27/1/10 at 08:02 PM

Aye - I grassed someone up for blatant shill bidding cos I was well pissed off. They took all his other items off, which was a lot - obviously a bit of a business going on (so I kinda felt a little bad) and suspended him. I then got thanked for doing my bit for the community and was given the super-secret vip elite telephone service number.

r1_pete - 27/1/10 at 08:15 PM

How do you get to find out the other bidders identity? all I ever see is bidder1 2 3 etc.

That's true.
Bud you can see what bidder 1,2,3 etc. have been bidding on.

In this case, bidder 3 is bidding on his stuff.

Steve G - 27/1/10 at 09:03 PM

As above - report him. Ebay will look at the trend and if it is a mate rather than fake account will just ban them too. Chances are if its a 2nd person, they're bidding each other's items up!!

What I find strange is how shill bidding is perfectly legal at REAL auction houses, and is infact instigated by the auctioneer!

worse, totally fictional bids! I dont see how, with shill bidding, they can prove that your mate doesnt want to buy the item?

l0rd - 28/1/10 at 08:27 AM

If i want to buy something on Ebay, I always have a value in mind that i want to pay, I always bid on the last 3 seconds with my highest bid.

But, my highest bid will be something really odd.

eg.

Everybody have a value in mind not to exceed say £30 quid. roughly £24 for the item and 6 postage

I will normaly bid on 24.73 or something so i can get a bit higher that £30 quid in total and hopefully win the auction.
