There has been a bit of discussion lately as to the merits and advantages of engines and their configuration.

So, in a light hearted way, i thought i would ask :

Whats the most famous car with a particular engine configuration


A few to start.

1 Cylinder -- (not sure if there are any)
2 Cylinder -- Must be the 2cv
3 Cylinder -- Dihatsu ? Polo diesel?
4 Cylinder -- Sierra Cosworth
5 Cylinder -- Audi Quatro
6 Cylinder -- Triumph Stag

Of course there is also:

V2 -- ?
V4 -- Saab
V6 -- Lancia Stratos
V8 -- Gt 40
V10 -- Dodge Viper
V12 -- Lambo, GTO, Mercedes

Flat 4 -- Subaru ? Alfa Sud ?
Flat 6 -- Porshe
Flat 8 -- ?
Flat 10 -- ?
Flat 12 -- Ferrari 512 boxer ( boyhood dream)


Im dead sure that almost nobody will agree with those , but hay, thats a democracy for you.

Not a car, but one of the most famous V twins must be the Ducati 916, four pot has to be the Lotus Esprit for me, Dino 246 for the V6, TVR Griffith for the V8 and TVR Speed 12 for the V12.

a bentley might get my vote on 4 cylinders .

some of the really early cars , might show some light on unique(maybe not famous) engine configs

V8 for the GT40??!?! Thats a larf isn't it, gotta be the Ford Mustang!!!! If I think of V8 thats the first thing I think of. imo anyway.

Single --- Honda XT 500
4 cyinder---- oooh emm RC30
Flat twin ----- BMW (all of them)

What about Hondas NR750? This thing was a V4 oval piston jobbie

1 cylinder stuart turner (marine)
lister diesel (dumper truck)
plastic pigs had a 1 cylinder 2 stroke engine ( most of them were blue) early 80's i think !
they were above the front wheel

Just to point out that Triumph never made a six cylinder Stag ! They were all V8

That Deltic looks a wee bit fiddly! A flipping complicated engine from the looks of it.

The Russians built a 42, (count them) 42 cylinder radial engine to power marine barges. The Zvezda consisted of 7 banks of 6 cylinders each.

Had about 6000 hp.

Try mixing the ht leads on that one!!!!

I think Jowett Javelin and some Morgan 3-wheelers had JAP V twin.

V twin has to be a JAP powered Morgan
a car with a reliable engine introduced pre war and I can remember them being raced at brands up to the late 70s. Not a BEC and built in Totenham

Sorry, for me its still gotta be the H24 Napier Sabre. Sleeve valves, 4000 HP, 24 cylinders, 48 spark plugs and growl to be heard.

Best V12 - Rolls Royce Griffon engine (as fitted to the Supermarine Spitfire)

Weren't the old 'blower' Bentleys straight 8s?
Oh and the 'W16' engines - Bugatti Veyron etc

Am i right in thinking that was after the Merlin was fitted late in ww2.

As for aircraft engines , I always liked the
Hercules radial engine that was fited in the Beaufighter, or the later Centaurus.

So many moving parts and so much depending on every bit !!!

My Laverda Jota has three cylinders and that sounds unbelievably raw - the neighbours hate it, especially on a Sunday morning when the students next door are still trying to overcome the excesses of the night before!
What about straight eights? Seem to recall a Packard in the 30's and Alfa Romeo used it on a GP car. Cheers, Pewe

If you liek weird engines the car that the company i work for built about 90 years ago is rather special...

Its got 12 pistons, no valves, 3 crankshafts and its 2 stroke....

My favourite F1 engine is the

Ferrari flat 12

Type: 312B Boxer F12
RPM: 11500
Power: 510 bhp ,

sounded fantastic!!

str8 6 - BMW must be

V4 - Taunus
V6 - renault alpine
V8 - Camaro - and all american m.
V10 - Viper

Surely the most famous V8 engine must be the Chevy 350? Love it or hate it, it's been in production virtually unaltered for what? 50 years or so? It isn't the *best* engine, but hey, talk about popular!

Maybe if you're a yank, most here I suspect would say Rover V8!
