Best Gearbox for Front Engine / RWD
scootz - 26/2/09 at 10:02 PM

Assuming 400-ish bhp and 300ish lb-ft torque, then what say you on suitable gearboxes... ?

cd.thomson - 26/2/09 at 10:26 PM

strengthed Borg Warner T5?

I know the standard one will deal with 300+ish bhp from the cossie YB

ss1turbo - 26/2/09 at 10:28 PM

Not many in that league as standard - BW T5, some of the Tremec ones off the top of my head...

scootz - 26/2/09 at 10:29 PM

Cheers Craig... what's involved in 'strengthening'?

cd.thomson - 26/2/09 at 11:28 PM

Sorry - not locost, but with big torque figures people start charging big bucks!

The casing itself is fairly bulletproof I think and the stronger gearsets will make the whole thing take some monster punishment.

(I knew my Capri days would help someone out on here eventually )

Might be worth a u2u to Hicost pointing him at this thread.

He's run 450bhp or so for ages in his Se7en using a T5 IIRC. See what he's got in his.
It's survived the odd 5000mile rally and track days so it must be pretty strong!

HTH,
James

getrag .

SMG versions aswell , 6 spd

generally tho the t5 box has the best ratios

hobbsy - 27/2/09 at 12:00 AM

Std gearbox and diff on a 200SX S14(/S14a) will take that...

I know as its around what mine had (less bhp but more torque)

Ben_Copeland - 27/2/09 at 07:11 AM

You have to remember that due to the car weighting a lot less there SHOULD be less stress on the drivetrain.

I would say the T5 box would be fine

speedyxjs - 27/2/09 at 07:56 AM

Supra box. Im told they're not too expensive either

matt_claydon - 27/2/09 at 08:00 AM

Supra 'box should do it with ease

Edit: Just beat me to it!

T5 every time, loved by V8 fans for a reason

coozer - 27/2/09 at 08:41 AM

Supra W58 box, I have one but struggling to get a bellhousing to mate to my zetec

scootz - 27/2/09 at 02:51 PM

Noticed mention of the good ol' Type 9 being stronger than many think... any further evidence of this?

not to support 400bhp reliably, not a chance!

scootz - 27/2/09 at 03:17 PM

Thanks you Alastair... Type 9 - DELETE!

mr henderson - 27/2/09 at 06:29 PM

I reckon that Audi V8 is going in that TVR

Am I right?

When I wrote that I hadn't yet read this

as I tend to work my way down from the top, so I still claim the credit for my assumption skills

Indeed you are! That's my thinking at the moment anyway! Just got to try and work out a cost-effective box / diff combo!

scootz - 4/3/09 at 09:40 PM

Went for an ex-Cosworth Borg-Warner T5. Hopefully will do the trick!

So what about the axle then? What sort is it now? TR6?

scootz - 4/3/09 at 10:54 PM

Not sure... still to find my way about the TVR.

Calling Seabass... (he has a Mk2 Vixen).

mr henderson - 5/3/09 at 07:49 AM

If it currently has an IL6 2.5, then it's odds on it's a TR6 axle. Which means that you will only be able to use about two fifths of what the Audi engine can produce, (if you want the axle to last, that is)

Actually, using an Audi engine in a Triumph based car makes sense, because

Triumph were owned by British Leyland
British Leyland owned Land Rover
Land Rover were owned by Ford
Land Rover were also owned by BMW
BMW used to supply engines to Bentley
Bentley are owned by VAG
VAG made the Audi engine

looks like I'm too late, (and too be honest the T5 is a better box) but we are successfully (so far) using a GM R25-R28 box from an Omega 3.0 manual (mainly fitted to police ones but there are a few around) behind a 375hp+ and lots of torque vauxhall XE with very large turbo installed in an Opel Kadett and its not gone bang yet despite a lot of standing starts at drag events..............boxes are £70 ish
