4-AGE Engine
Kosmo - 20/9/06 at 06:43 AM

Hi,

Can you use bike throttle bodies on the Toyota 4-AGE engine ?

Anyone doing this allready, if so what type is best and what ECU etc are you using ?

Cheers,
Kosmo

Hi Kosmo,

Yes you can use bike throttle bodies on a 4age, this is exactly what I did on my old engine. Don't think you'll need 750's. I used GSXR 600's and they were more than up to the job.

Spec

1.6 4age phase 3
Raw trac pac 1 cams
steel head gasket
Omex 500 ecu
home made inlet manifold.

Like this the engine made 161bhp and 127 ftlbs at mech repairs in Cheltenham.

The omex is not the cheapest but I already had the 100 box so just sent it off for the upgrade to 500.

There are a coulple of pics in my old archive (under Ben Smith).

Changed to a R1 engine now but 4age is going in another striker as we speak.

Good Luck

Ben.

The 4AGE was available with ITB's in it's 20V configuration.

I can send you pics of my 20V setup if it will be any use (the engine's not running yet, but you'll get the idea). Just PM me if you need them.

Keep an eye on fleabay because they come up fairly regularly. Much easier than adapting a bike setup.

Cheers,

Tim

Hi Guys.... thanks for all the reply's, very helpful.

What are ITB's ?

Thanks

ITB's Independant Throttle Bodies. Ie they already have 1 per port.

Hi,This is my next winter project and I have already bought the GSXR 750 bodies and megasqiurt ready for the job.
See Rob Lanes webite as he is doing this conversion as we speak. He has already built a very nice manifold with a little help from a very good welder called Martin, cant remember his second name!!Lives near me

Please pardon my ignorance, but why can't/ don't people just use butterflys at the beginning of each tract as the Toyota head has injector ports in the head which must surely be in the ideal postion? Then it's just a case of a plenum chamber upstream of that with the map and intake temperature sensor located in it.

I've got to ask as a old set of carbs or ill fitting throttle bodies could be cut to suit, meaning you save the cost of a set of bike throttle bodies(which are getting more expensive).

If I'm talking out of my hoop, then i'll blame it on the red wine.
P.s. just found a set of Alfa 33 throttle bodies for a tenner so I'm now hopeful this will work.

Hello!
Most people DO use the Toyota injectors and fuel rail.
The idea to use four bodies instead of one with a mappable ecu is to increase air and fuel.
A single TB on a swirling plenum will not flow as well or as responive as four openings directly linked to the head.
The beauty of bike set ups is that they are neat compact and already designed to work as a bank of four.
Bodging old bodies to work as four looks a bit bulky and then they need to be linked.
Twin 40's work but most of the bulky carb is of no use.and these are probably more expesive anyhow.
I dont know what the alfa bodies are like butfor the toyota another used option is the 20valve bodies.

The idea is/was to emulate the set up use on the formula atlantic engine.

Even through the red wine haze I did state using a butterfly at the beginning of each inlet tract, to over come the problems of accelerating the airflow as the butterfly plate is opened.

So if i've got this correct bike throttle bodies are used with the injector ports blanked off, mainly because they are easier to space.

I'll post up a picture after i've had a play with the saw and welder.

In a word,Yes........
The red wine haze always makes me understand everything perfectly, until the next morning.
