but has anyone considered using a Land Rover Series transfer box as a means to get a reverse gear?

Image a rectangle as above, I is input drive from engine. The xfer box splits this into Fwd and Rear drives, as shown by letters.
So R goes to rear diff and F has a starter motor.
Now xfer box has 3 positions (ignoring the yellow knob)
Hi = 2wd drive to rear
Neutral
Lo = low ratio 4wd
So under normal drving, lever is in Hi.
To get reverse, engine is put in neutral and xfer box is put into lo. This connects both L and R, plus lowers gearing so stater motor has less effort
to turn.
Cheap as chips!
photo below shows it attached to side of gearbox.
the bit before the transmission drum brake has the gears, the bit infront of that contains the selector shafts.
dunno what it weighs but I happen to have a spare that I could try to weigh; some internals could be removed but not a huse saving. gyes between 20
- 40 kg.

Sounds like it could work - how heavy is this box you talk about?
Forget it... just lean out the car and push yourself back with your hands... that thing looks big and HEAVY!!!

That looks heavy!!! It would be lighter to always carry a passenger and get them to get out and push me backwards
Good Idea.
However, You cant lift a geabox with a transfer box on your own without popping yer little bits.
The transfer box on its own is quite heavy.
I know I have tried to fit one fron under a Landy. Its a crane in through the passenger door, and drop it thru the floor job
Also you need to check which way round the thing turns.
A bit of a Non-Starter in my book on the weight alone.
...why not try a Suzuki Samurai transfer case instead? Seems like a much lighter option..
As other have said it looks damn heavy. Also - assuming the front and rear diff are the same ratio - the ratio between F and R will be 1:1.
I thought about something but not that heavy.
In non viscous range rover and coil landrovers the Xtransfer box has a small set of planet gears in a for splitting the constant drive front to
rear.
The planet gears have splined shafts in bearings at each end, the planet gear housing spins freely.
When you lock up the drive all that happens is the forward facing splined shaft is locked to the planet gear housing.
Okay for a reverse box you run the opposite lock the shafts but when reversing realease and lock the planet housing.
the only extra load going forwards is the friction from a couple of bearings.
Get the bits out of a 4 speed RR box as they are physically smaller, make a little housing up and away you go.
Built my car, its so light I just push around so could not be bothered to develop this.
