Disc Conversion

Hi Guys,

The Indy is slowly coming together, got myself some shiny alloys with tyres today for £50

After my car goes through its IVA I will be converting it to have rear discs.

I already have a LSD ready to be fitted but thats it so far.

What else will I need to fit? Obviously bolt on drive shafts, new bearing carriers (with disc mounts), discs and calipers. Is there anything I have missed? does it matter what donor i get the bits off?

I used the full disk set up from the sierra and i think they are great but there are lots who prefer drums.
The cable is different to the drum set up.

Just be careful that your brake bias is set up properly or you may lock the back end up when braking hard.

Why do people prefer drums?

I was only looking at doing the conversion as I want the LSD fitted so thought I may aswell do it as one swap, I could just go for hybrid drive shafts to use the drums and LSD if that is a better option?

The front is going to have 4 pots on it so hopefully shouldnt be a problem, failing that a bias valve can soon be fitted

my 9" drums worked just as well as the disks, i just prefer to see disks through the wheels.
No real difference in braking power and the hand brake works just the same. it all comes down to your own taste

On a track or some agressive driving discs will shine through as they can dissapate the heat better than drums, if drums were so good they would be put on performance cars, oh thats right they are not

Never had the car on a track since
fitting the disks so cant comment on that but have had a few fast blats
and noticed that the car brakes flatter and doesnt tend to 'dive' as much.other than that
the drums worked very much the same.

I wouldnt mind driving mine and a car with drums back to back to compare them.

Don't think you do need new uprights seem to remember that you can buy a conversion plate to mount the caliper on, might be wrong though. but you will have to have the abs teeth machined down to go through hole in upright
