Rear Panel

Hi,

I offered up the rear tub yesterday and the alignment at the top looks good but the lower edges don't want to sit parallel to the sides of the chassis which then causes the sides of the tub to flare outwards. It also doesn't push fully forwards at the bottom. It feels a bit too stiff to force the panel in. tried to explain it with the pics below. I'd wondered whether the fibreglass is too thick or too narrow along the bottom edge so I've tried sanding down the inside corners a little but this hasn't made much difference.

Its not clear in these pics but the tub is tight against the chassis in the areas I've highlighted and you can see the effect which is the gap at the front of the panel

Alternatively I thought I could cut a radius out of the lower lip at each corner which might help the tub flex in a little but I don't want to start cutting fibreglass if there is a better solution out there. Has anyone else found this and have a way to overcome it?

I think it the later MK tub as the top edges are flat where it meets the side panel.

Cheers,
Lee

some people cut a section from the rear panel have a look at Hellfires photo album they have removed a small section and rejoing using an alluminium strip to cover the joint. The back panel on the original Indy was slightly too wide requiring the sides to be pushed in

Life is like a bowl of fruit, funny how all the weird looking ones are left alone

I pulled mine in at the top, then just fixed it where it fell at the bottom.
I've fixed all my bodywork so far with self tappers and shakeproof washers to make replacing panels as easy as possible.

You couldn't pwn your way out of a wet paper bag, with "PWN ME!!" written on it, from the "pwned take-away" which originally contained one portion of chicken tikka pwnsala and the obligatory free pwnpadom.

I'll see if i can flex the sides in bit then offer up the rear arches to see how they'd look, if no luck will use Hellfire's method.

Thanks for self tappers tip, I'd been using rivnuts so far but after having a couple come loose and end up in the rails, I'm no longer a fan of them, probably more down to my lack of skill fitting them than the rivnuts themselves!

Thanks,
Lee

New rear panels are narrower at the base so when pushed on, the sides flare out only true cure is to narrow the chassi by grinding corners away or struggle ones tits off spent hours struggling mine is on but not 100% happy may remove it yet and get grinder out!!!

I've already had a hand file over the back corners! I measured the width of the rear end which came to 1070mm, the width of the inside panel is somewhere around 1050 - 1060mm depending on where measured. I've dremelled away a small "U" out of the panel's bottom lip which has definitely helped it flex in a bit.

I reckon I need to take a bit more away from this lip as this should help the whole panel move forward a bit more at the bottom which will then help it line up with the chassis diagonal each side. That's tomorrow's job though
