Quick search says if its not a Metric thread it will be a 1/2" UNF pal

This sort of problem is the bane of my existence it is probably M12x1.5 but even if it is M12 it could be anything. 1.25 or 1.75 pitch or even 5/8" or 11/16" UNF

Depends entirely on what company manufactured the part you are going to have to measure the thread major diameter, and also the pitch.
If you haven't got a thread pitch gauge then comparing the thread with a bolt of known pitch, whatever you do unless you are 100 percent sure don't try screwing nut on using anything stronger than your fingers.
