I was looking at the MK owners club site, and noticed Paul's GT1 with it's hayabusa engine in, and decided to investigate how much BHP that's pumping out..

160 as standard according to this site (click me) which also sells a turbo kit to take it upto 300bhp.. that'd be like 700bhp in something like a celica, and for the weight, nearing 1000bhp skyline!

have to have an 80ft rear wing!

Those power figures that you are looking at are the power at the back wheel i think.

The power for the busa is more like 180bhp.

Whats this about it being equal performance as a 1000bhp skyline with tuning. That gt1 would probably beat a 1000bhp skyline round a track even with a standard untuned engine.

My mate's skyline has had some moderate mods to get it upto 400bhp, and he's pulling 4.175 seconds 0-60. And I'm sure his top speed will be over 160.

Just saying on the power/weight ratio.

And skylines do handle well for their weight, so long as you know how to drift!
Probably helps not having any seats/spare wheel and not eating for 2 weeks.

Hayabusa 180bhp? ouch! But the wheel figure is more important IMO, who cares if your engine puts out 500bhp if it's lost in the transmission - just means you're wasting energy!

I'm seriously considering a GT1 build. Is the hyabusa the way to go, or the fireblade? Are they both easily available?

standard hayabusa motorbike 175bhp, radical motorsport (powertec) bore them out to 1500cc (mainly stroke i think) and claim 252bhp at flywheel normally aspirated. they do cost a fair few pennies though...
We race alongside 2x 1500's at present in our vauxhall engined car (which is quicker..).

Vauxhall? Which engine is that, I know the 3L v6 of the senator pumps out 204bhp, and the 2.0L gsi pumps out 150 as standard, so how do you beat the hayabusa's? Is it a turbo'd calibra engine?

it's a standard 2ltr, 16v Xe engine (early astra produced 155bhp, later ones had heavier bottom end and produced 150)

We run it with cams specific to the reg's, omega pistons, wasted stem valves, better springs, but standard lifters, steel rods, standard crank, dry sump, vernier pulleys, sealed ignition box, swindon manifold (better than caterham one) with twin webber 45's, big bore exhaust, light flywheel, racing clutch + 4pot brakes, hewland 5spd box. with ram air affect we produce around 240-45bhp. I also think the 252bhp stated by radical is OTT and other people have mentioned the figure 214bhp more recently.

The SP1 class (vauxhall) has a better power-weight than the sp2 class (currently 3kg's per bhp) the hayabusa engine radicals have to carry a bit of ballast - normally a fuller tank of fuel.

Nice, very nice. I've just done a bit of searching around on xe engine, and the cost of doing work looks to be quite high to get the big figures. I think for a newbie construction like me the thought of a bike engine giving me 180bhp out of the box is very appealing!

How much you reckon you spent to get the engine upto that amount?

err, isn't my engine to start with, can list some prices that i know of:
(all prices approx)
dry sump kit £1000-1200
steel rods x4 £600
arp rod bolts £65
vernier pulley £150
tyres £450 set(4)
rear wing £1200+
wheels - split rims, mag centres, spun ali (in track shot) £1200
rest of the stuff i don't know prices or is home or custom made/ordered.

You can get 180-200 bhp by simply changing cams, light flywheel and run on webber 45's

I hope to get some help in rebuilding mine from the guy who runs the car pictured!

For the race engine i think you could quite easily be talking £4k when including all parts, balancing, dyno'd etc.

just to add that you could probably get more bhp for less £.

The race engine is built to tight regulations. eg forget the balancing of crank to flywheel as only gives marginal gains - could buy 250+bhp cams instead of regulation ones, + solid followers and rev it to 9000rpm, though then you might want to think about a steel crank. I've seen a 280bhp motor running an expensive fuel injection setup. 300bhp has been done, though these figures are SERIOUS money!

our engine only revs to 7800rpm (as per sealed ignition pack)

You'll probably pay a lot of money (several £k's) for a hayabusa engine - i'm picking up a bargain xe for £150 out of a road car and have seen others for £3-400 recently. couple of hundred quid on a rebuild and £140 for gearbox adapter plate, £300 for webbers. rebuilt engine to good spec for£800 putting out hopefully approx 200bhp, same money might get you a fireblade engine i suppose. the vauxhall has more to give if you have the cash!

Caterham made a special last year which had a vauxhall 2L engine in it.

This engine was built by Swindon Racing Engines and put out about 300bhp. It was non turbo. I heard that the engine cost £26k and the whole 7 cost £70k. It would be nice to have but i feel was a little extreme. Although it did have traction control.

Donut (Andy),

You can fit a second seat in for track days but sadly you wouldn't hear a stereo with a helmet on (hence not one fitted) and the hamper might produce some undesired aerodynamics.

Otherwise a great idea, why don't they put them on at Lemans, they could have a nice rest and quick bite to eat on the Lousaine straight or whatever it's called.
