Engine mounts?

As far as I understand MK can provice engine mounts for the Pinto and Fireblade engines. The problem is that if I want to avoid the swedish penalty fee for older, dirtier engines I would have to try to find a 1988-89 Pinto with cat and I've been told they are tuned down and not very powerfull so I wonder what other options are available.

Btw, does the MK Indy need a remote shift or is it designed so it works as it is?

they make a zx9r mount, and will mount any engine if you give them the engine (may a problem for tou out there though i suppose!)

I don't think a bike engine is worth the trouble.

Any engine you say... [starts dreaming] Perhaps the Saab short six... [snaps out of it] What about known engines such as CVH and Zetec? Could engine mounts perhaps be made without the engine there?

Btw, does the sump needs modification?

It ofcourse depends on what your intended use is, but for me it is too it seems much truble with a bike engine. First it seems to be harder to find one. Then it's the cooling, electrics and instruments that is more complicated. Then there is the issue about reverse. At least the Hayabusa leans to the left so it isn't really suitable for left hand drive. Also the limit of 10kW/100kg may cause problems with bike engines.

there is as we speak a LHD BEC under construction at MK, not sure where its been exported too, PTM will know

Cooling, no different to a car
Electrics, easier
Instruments, no different
Reverse, easily mounted if required, ive never found the need on the road, GT1 race car as one cos regulations say it must have
Power to weight, not sure bout that one, take a spark plug out for test, add weight to car at test ? detune for test ? Baffle exhaust for test ? stop throttles opening fully for test ?
Finding one.........easy......

all that said there not every ones cup of tea, but me, i love em.........

Does it use the ZX9R? Does it lean and if so which way?

In Sweden the regulations for road cars says it must have reverse of the weight is above 350 kg or something. So it's either an electric reverse of use a Honda Goldwing.

And you think they're not going to notice that? The engine must be permanently (or "not easily" changed) set to the specified effect. Obviously those who build with turbo engines often run into problems with this since it's so easy to increase the turbo pressure.

Yes, it's an interesting option. You get the sequencial gearbox, and you can probably even fit an automatic clutch. But as I see it unless you want it for race purposes or simply like the sound it's not that interesting. The high revs may make it difficult to do things like pocket parking and I really prefer low revs, I hav eeven considered a diesel engine, but decided against it due to tax reasons.

MK made some mounts up for me, I sent them a pattern made from thin ply and they fabricated in steel. Engine mounts seem a big issue when starting out. All I did was suspend the engine and gearbox in the chassis, support it so that it stays in the right place. Then look at where the mounts can attach to the block, find some suitable chassis engine mounting rubbers (Cortina/Sierra seem popular) and make a pattern that join the two together, then get a fabricating company to make them. Look at pictures of how other people do it and you will soon get some ideas. The real trick is to mount the engine so that everything will fit! The Zetec is poss a good choice as more people are producing cheaper injection kits to run with or without a cat. Called a company the other day and they do a silencer with a cat fitted for about £80 extra. Unless you use the standard Pinto injction the cost will be the same whichever engine you use. I fitted a MT75 gearbox which with a simple mod allows the gearlever to be mounted where you want it.

They can do that? It sure sounds like a good option. I could ofcourse also try to find somebody local to make them.

Let's see, the Zetec from ? fits the MT75 that can be found on post 1988 Sierras.

I would check out a local company. Go and see them and tell them what you are doing, you will get a chance to see what standard size steel they use, then you can make your patterns with this in mind.

how much did MK charge for this? I'm shortly going to be attempting to mount a mazda rotary. I think I may just about be able to get away with using the existing mounts but more likely gonna need all new mounts made.

Martin did'nt charge me. He said when I bought the kit if I made the patterns he would copy them for me. At the time very few people where fitting Zetecs and I think it would be useful for him to have some mounts if anyone else wanted some or he built another Zetec car. It's easy to get some 40mm tube and some 3mm plate and cut the bits out once the pattern is made then get them welded up.
