type 9 gearbox mounting
Hi
Can someone confirm whether the Sierra type 9 mounting should be attached to the top or bottom of the two chassis plates?
I stupidly went with logic at the time and put it on the top as it allowed me to drill etc on my own.
However now I've come to fit the transmission tunnel top and find the gearbox sits proud of the top rails.
So if I've done it wrong could someone let me know and if mounting it on top is correct can anyone post a photo of the hole cut in the trans
tunnel cover.
Many thanks

Thanks for replying Bob, did you find that the gearbox plate with the three torx bolts that holds the gear lever in was proud of the rails along with
the rear top edge of the box itself?

Mine is on the bottom, didnt use the tabs in the end as I made a plate for the westfield mount and it bolted straight onto the bottom of the chassis
rails. It it was above them the gear stick remote would have come out the dash.

slightly different question.
If my rear mounting is on top of the brackets and the gearbox is filled with oil does anyone know if it's possible to remove it and if so
how?
Had a go last night and couldn't remove it as propshaft hits underside of chassis rails preventing the gearbox being lifted high enough to slide
the gearbox mount out.
Can the prop shaft be removed with the gearbox and engine staying put?
Thanks for any help

No ufortunatly the prop wont come out with the box or diff in place,i was thinking of removing the floor under the prop and fitting brackets to fit
plate back on far too much work for what its worth.
My type 9 sits on the tabs fine, everything was ok with the pinto anyway. The zetec does sit in a slightly different possition though and i wont know
for sure until its all in,but i cant see why bolting to the bottom of the tabs cant be done with good grade bolts and not over stressed.
I only put the mount on the top of the tabs because it made the prop box and engine level.

Did you use a westfield mount Bob? I think I mounted mine on the bracket a funny way so the engine sits level and the plate that the mount is on bolts
to the bottom.

I would have used the westie mount but it was to small to hard mount,i would have had to fab up another plate for it to sit on.
Tabs needed to be longer on mine to get the westie one on,might have changed now as mine is a 2001 chassis.
I just removed the original sierra one from its home (huge mounting plate) drill two holes and two M8 cap heads and nylocs later it was on.

tried tightening up the Ford M12 thread with hex end which has the earth lead on the end last night to see if that would pull the gearbox down
slightly but it had no effect.
Should the large end of the bell washer that fits under the mounting butt up against the underside of it as at the moment it only just touches and I
think that may be part of the problem.

If i can remember without crawling under the car the bolt (M12) had a thick washer inbetween itself and the bell.
Sod it i'm going in the garage i'll have a look

OK i've got it now, memory has come back and after a look i have no bell.
This is becuase i never had one in the 1st place,i used a very heavy gauge washer as the bolt i used ran out of thread and i also didnt want to waste
the box mount with the bolt.
An extra 5mm of thread allowed me to pull the box down onto the mount properly when tightened.
hope this helps

Thanks for all your assitance. I'm going to try and cut down spare steel sleeve from the suspension and try using that as a spacer inside the
bell to try pulling the gearbox down that extra 4mm.
If that doesn't work It looks like I'll need to cut out the mount that's fitted and fit a new one underneath the chassis plates.
Thanks again for all the assistance it's much appreciated.
I'm just waiting for a question to pop up on something I've done on the build successfully so I can start repaying the favour, problem is
I can't think of a subject which hasn't caused me some sort of grief!! luckily the feeling of triumph getting something to work more than
out weighs the tantrums I throw when things are going down hill :-)

well this is the end of the subject. The problem is not that the gearbox isn't seating down far enough it's that the bell washer
isn't butting up under the mount. The only option left open to me is to remove it and fit it under the brackets. Shame I'll have to
destroy the mount to remove it but that's life.
Thanks again for everyones assistance

The standard mount didn't work for me - the gearbox moved too much and the prop caught on the sides of the tunnel.
The Westfield mount cured the problem and was easy enough to fit with a fabricated bracket.
