melted coil

left my ignition switched on while i checked my lights then forgot,went back in the workshop about an hour later only to discover the coil was red hot and had melted all the plastic covering have i wired it up wrong or did i just leave the ignition switched on. never come across this before

Always happens with plugs and points as the coil is left energised. It doesn't usually affect electronic ignition, but if the coil is storing charge for a long time with nowhere to discharge to it will. I saw one explode and coat the whole under bonnet of a Granada with hot oil, lucky not to go up in flames, because it was the wrong type. There's a lot of wire in them when they gut themselves as well.

lecy coils will melt if left switched on for some time,jus get another one and dont do it again
