Side Panel Fitting
I'm about to start fitting body panels, the side panels being the first..
whats best to attach them to the chassis, do people just rivet on or do you use rivnuts?
ive been searching build diaries but cant seem to find much info on the actual fitment
Thanks
Mike

rivnut allows you to make them removable
rivets are obvioulsy fixed
some of mine are rivetted and others are rivnutted

Fibreglass Indy panels? Surely Sikaflex?
If it were me, I'd rivet Aluminium panels mind...

We pop riveted our fibreglass panels, but had to use washes and spacers inbetween chassis and panels as the panel was slightly larger in than the
chassis and if it was squishing and distorting the panels if forced.

Im going to rivet mine. Less time consuming that rivnuting and just as easy (if not easier) to remove.
How long can i resist the temptation to drop a V8 in?

rivuts need a bigger hole to be drilled don't they? you really want to drill out as little of your chassis as possible

don't write OT on a new thread title, you're creating the topic, everything you write is very much ON topic!

I used large head rivets along the top edges (avoiding where the scuttle nedds to sit), down the rear edge (which ends up behind the rear arch) and
then along the underside (packed out with solid rubber strip) in the engine bay. All other points of contact with the chassis were Sikaflex'd
into place. Panels do not move/flex at all.

I would fit the rear panel and the side panels at the same time.
That way you can pack out the rear panel a bit where it reaches the rear stays from the shock mounts down to the bottom rail.
Then if you pack out the side panels to match, you can overcome the "MK rear panel too wide thing"
Unless they've modified the mould?

Whenever you're fitting panels, be aware of anything that might rattle or vibrate whilst you're driving later on. In particular, try not
to allow 2 hard surfaces to be close to each other without having some Sikaflex or Tiger Seal etc between them. It may look solid now, but if it can
move, it will and it'll probably make a lot of noise about it!

We used PU adhesive and clamped the side panels with long lengths of wood to ensure they were straight and flat.
