Just a small posting regarding MK.

As most are aware we are experiencing clutch/gear problems.

a very hot Sunday 23rd May - we put the engine back together after identifying no apparent problems with the gears and took it down to Mr MK's home for a little adise. We explained our problem to him, before we could draw a second breath he had vanished in the car up the road taking it for his test run... some time later upon his return, he was very concerned about the handling being very dangerous - it was jumpin on bumps and he stated the suspension was set up all wrong. As we had no advice about the setup geometry, we assumed (incorrectly) that it was as a normal car'ish. He proceeded to get out his Laser Guided Steering Tools out to put things right. He advised on what we should do and we set to work straight away. 1 hour later and the dampers, steering and numberous other things were advised upon.

The car drove absolutely transformed - we could not believe what a well setup 7 drove like!!! Superb.

However my point - is this. We visited him for advise. We came away knowing far, far more than we'll remember. How many other manufacturers would allow you to take up there very valuable Sunday without complaint? Possibly none! We cannot praise or rate MK highly enough. As far as we are concerned anyone considering buying a Kit should try MK first....

To play devils advocate - maybe they sell them set up right?

Actually, when you build a Caterham a full inspection by Caterham themselves is included in the cost so I guess they make sure you go out in a safe car and don't need to bother them on a Sunday!

Does the inspection by Caterham actually include setting up the steering and suspension geometry after completion of build?.

It would actually be a good idea for some of the smaller manufacturers to offer this service and make it clear that they will set up the geometry after completion. It doesn't take long to do and the alterations can make a substantial difference to the handling capabilities.

Could you share some of the setting secrets please?

Park the car level and jack the front up. Remove the front wheels and drill 2 holes in 2 pieces of angle so you can bolt them to the wheel studs. With the steering straight ahead measure between the two just in front of the car, then at a point further out. I used a metre long but it could be any. If the measurements are same you have no toe, I set mine very slightly in (4mm at a metre). Then turn the angle upwards and do the same for castor and camber. You can use a spirit level for this if your chassis is level. It gets you somewhere near and you can experiment with different settings once you have a baseline to go back to.

I don't know the answer to that one as I haven't bought one. I just know that they inspect it.

I'm sure it would be a service worth paying for, and teh manufacturer shold be the right source for getting it right so long as they know what they are doing (this comment is not aimed at any manufacturer at all, but just because you can make a good chassis doesn't mean you are suspension experts - read road test on Audi's!).
