That looks like the £43K entry level Phaeton. I reckon the Jag XKR would give it a run for it's money in the depreciation stakes....

A cracking second hand buy though - a lot of car for the money I'd say.

One parked outside work today randomly, nice looking car to be fair, but not small money!

What makes it slightly worse is that car would actually be classed as a low mileage car with 81k on a nine year old car!

I'd love one of them they're amazing. I had a ride in one (A friends dad worked for VW a few years back) and it was almost as good as an XJ.

TBH the phaeton isn't a car anyone who cares about depreciation should consider, more for the kind of person who considers any money they get back swapping it for the next one as a bonus.

LPG conversion to balance out the running costs and that could be a stonking waft-wagon for 2nd hand Mondeo money.

I've got a real thing for them, I had no idea they had got so cheap!

I remember seeing it on top gear and dreaming about "one day"...

Lets be honest though, you only buy new if you can afford the depreciation. Most i ever lost on a vehicle was £3750 over 3 or 4 years. Latest car is getting sold soon, i expect to lose 1500 after 2.5 years use.

Is it just me that's deepy unimpressed by something that looks like a Passat (which in saloon form is one of VW's most unlovely creations imho) with extra chromey bits?

Even the Top Gear web site says:

quote:

The Volkswagen Phaeton is an uber-saloon that looks too much like a swollen Passat to convince most people, and its heavy steel body gives it cumbersome dynamics. The only place to enjoy it is from the back seat.

or am I missing something really important?

The thing is just a fatmans passat
It's a nice sofa on wheels not very exciting to drive pretty bland.

yes. part of The appeal of it is that it looks like a swollen passat, where all it's nearest competitors are overly styled and glittered.

We bought our SAAB 95 at ten years old, its now 12+, we have the original bill of sale for something like £30,000 new with all of the nice extra's like full heated & chilled leather seats, harmann kardon stereo system with more speakers than i can find, climate control etc.

Bought it off the guy who bought it new in 2000.

We paid £2000 for it - it had a full service histoy & 67,000 miles on the clock.

I couldnt live with myself if i lost £28,000 in ten years on a car, mind you - luckily i dont even have that kind of money to lose !

Its an awesome car, so far it has suffered the common little problems which are all DIY fixes, we will be keeping it until it dies, as long as we can still afford the fuel, it averages about 28 mpg

So it's cool because it's as ugly as a Passat, doesn't handle very well and is pretty boring to drive........ no wonder it's only £6k! On the plus side it's probably a better car/buy than a Skoda Superb but then that's not really a recomendation!

No thanks

It's not supposed to be fun to drive, and looks are a personal thing. It is how ever unbelievably comfortable and far more reliable than the equivelent citroen or Jag you'd need to buy to get a simillar level of comfort. Too many car makers are afraid of making comfortable cars as we're all told by adverts and magazines that we want 'sporty' cars.

I also think it's very much an 'old money' car. It was designed for people with a lot of money who don't feel the need to be ostentatious about it.

We had a 9 year old XJ Sovereign in 2006. It was valued at £3,500 whereas it would have been £45,000 new. 0-60 in a shade under 8 seconds and 17mpg. We didn't have it long.

That a8 is awesome lol. Cool car if you can stomach the fuel bill. Must be 10mpg if you are careful!

I actually like the vw Pheaton, mainly as it sinks into the background. Build quality is the same as a Bentley, amazing mile munchers, a great used buy in my book.

The Phaeton is a stormer (IMHO ).

Anyhoo... big French cars have to be the biggest pound-for-pound depreciators.
