Metal paint colour

I want to paint my chassis a dark bronze/gold colour (JPS shade), but since I can't actually find a metal paint of that colour I thought I ought to at least prime my parts to give them some protection for now. I'll start with an etch primer, but then I was wondering what colour/type of paint to use for the normal primer on top? Would a bog standard grey metal paint work ok? Or would white be better?

I've used this before - the colour isnt too bright and might do the job?

Aha, perfect! Now I just need to find a non hammerite one!!

Or would etch primer followed by smoothrite be ok? I just hear all sorts of horror stories of hammerite not actually staying stuck.
