steering column.

I've got a column from a late model Sierra with a tilt/reach adjustment. With the column fitted as it comes out of the donor the steering wheel appears too far back even with it in the forward most position, is this the norm? I have to sit close to the wheel to get the clutch fully down.

Looking at the fixing brackets it looks as if the whole lot could be unbolted and fitted on the back of the chassis brackets moving the column forward by about 1-2 inches which feels a lot better, has anyone tried this?
