zetec flywheels

does anyone know if the 1.6 and 1.8 zetec flywheels are the same ?

I am planning to mate the type 9 to the zetec and have been advised to loose the 2 litre flywheel because of weight.
It seems most use the 1800 wheel but there are plenty 1600 zetecs kicking around in the scappies and when purchasing clutches they are marked up 1.6/1.8 so just a thought.

I used a 1.8 escort zetec flywheel (which I had lightend) and the 1.6 / 1.8 mondeo clutch. I can't imagine the 1.6 and 1.8 are too different. If anything the 1.6 would be lighter ?. As long as you have the right clutch components and release bearing (CCT133 - capri) you should be OK.

might be wrong though

Thanks wil

I thinks its best to just copy the others,i'll go for a 1800 flywheel and clutch with the same release bearing as yourself.

If its not broken dont fix it

I think it's more likely to be heavier as the engine has less torque and therefore it would be much easier to stall with a lighter flywheel.

You could be right andy,i have a 1600 pinto flywheel in the garage and its heavier than the 2 litre one i fitted to pinto in the car now.
The only significant difference is that the clutch plate is far smaller on the 1.6 pinto flywheel so maybe zetecs are the same.

Anyhow it seems most people who instal the zetec use the 1800 flywheel,it was just a thought.

told you I could be wrong

so my theory that becuase the 1.8 flywheel is lighter than the 2.0, doesn't apply to the 1.6 then ?.

This was a bit of a minefield for me.
I have a 2.0l ex Mondeo Zetec to which I have fitted a 1.8l ex Mondeo flywheel. I originally ordered a clutch kit for a 1.8 Escort Zetec, (thinking all zetecs were the same), but the spacing of the locating dowel holes were incompatable. A 1.8 Mondeo clutch fitted.
I have also heard that the 1.6 and 1.8 flywheels are the same providing they both come from the same vehicle model, however the Quinten Hazel catalogue lists two different pressure plates so this may not be the case.
And just to complicate matters further I have been told that there are more than one type of 1.8l zetec flywheels fitted to Mondeos.

Thanks for that info,it is a bit of a minefield with so many variations and matches on all the zetec instal websites.
One thing for sure everyone seems to use the same clutch release bearing.

Looking at MicroCAT, the part numbers for the 1.6 and the 1.8 Zetec in Escort have the same part number 928M-6K390-AB so logic says they are the same.

The 1.6 and 1.8 in Mondeo have the same number as Escort, but the 2L in Mondeo has part number is 928M-6K390-CB

Hope this helps
James

From reading the posts regarding the flywheels and clutch combos, i'm assuming that the 1800 flywheel i have just puchased that came from an escort would be better fitted with the 1800 escort clutch ?

For the record the flywheel I removed from a 1.8l Mondeo had the part no. 928M 6398 AE

Hello Bob,

I think you can't use the escort 1,8 clutch as it is, the splines won't match the type 9 gearbox. (talking from experience...)

The clutch you'll need is:
ECK 1410 /RS
Finis 5028341

You said it

I ended up taking the flywheel to the parts supplier and offering up pressure plates to ensure I got one that fitted.

proof that this forum works perfectly if you ask the Question

Thanks again,at least i know for definate that the clutch i need is a 1.8 mondeo

I presume if two are listed i need the early one since this flywheel came from a 95 car.

Beware of the later ones, some are for hydraulic clutches.

928V is not a valid prefix - I'm assuming you're misreading 928M

The part is fitted as follows:

VL: NC MONDEO (C/DW27-C/DW162)
MD: - ______________________________
BS: -- ______________________________
VS: -- ______________________________
EN: EY ZETEC 1.8L DOHC EFI NA I4 G*MP
TR: RP 5 SPD MAN TRANS A EAO MTX75

And

VL: NC MONDEO (C/DW27-C/DW162)
MD: - ______________________________
BS: -- ______________________________
VS: -- ______________________________
EN: EM ZETEC 1.6L DOHC EFI NA I4 G*8
TR: RP 5 SPD MAN TRANS A EAO MTX75

No other usages for this, but it has been up-revisioned to 928M 6398 AG which is also common with 1.6 and 1.8 Zetec Escorts (similarly the AE suffix is common for 1.6 and 1.8 Zetecs in Mondeo, Fiesta and Escort)

would you hazard a guess that what i'm looking at is a 1.8 flywheel? or a 2.0 one?

i cant get back to the scrappy until the weekend unfortuantely :O/

i should have took a weighing scales with me should'nt i

i believe the 2.0 is about 10kg & the 1.8 8kg but i could be wrong, its happened many times before LOL :OD

Also note:

928M-6398-AE/AF/AG
928M-6375-AE/AF/AG
928M-3K690-AB

Are hydraulic variants of flywheel (the 3 different lines reflect the 3 different levels of assembly, 3k690 being the top level complete flywheel assembly)

Anything prior to that (alphabetical order in the suffix) will be non-hydraulic and presumably therefore not compatible?

If it's 928M 6398 AF it's definitely a 1.6/1.8 flywheel, not a 2.0
