My R1 started OK

Just thought the BEC topic list needed balancing up a little

Maybe Yamaha put a timer into their ECU's and if you take too long to build the kit they just self destruct and never work?

Congrats to all who started, and D'OH to all those that haven't....

It's always hard to point people in the right direction when you're posting on a message board - a couple of hours in their garage would have it sorted without a doubt!

I'm looking for a change in career - maybe I've just found a niche.....

Since all of you lucky people managed to get your R1 engined cars started, how about giving those who are having a problem a hand by telling us how the bloody Cyclelock is bypassed so we can also say "My R1 started OK, eventually."

I compared the US wiring diagram to the Euro versions at the back of my Haynes manual. this then shows where the continuity is required for the feeds to stater relay assembly and IIRC the ECU.

In fact I replaced the whole starter relay assembly which is not actually a starter relay but just a collection of diodes to ensure all starting conditions are met eg clutch, neutral, sidestand etc.

Are you sure your ECU is alive?

Hope this helps

Jim

The problem is that most people (including me) have probably tucked all these cables away somewhere. And even if we can get to the connectors all we can say is 'connect black to black' unless we strip the loom back!

It's not that no-one wants to help, it's just that it's not that simple!

Fair point Coose, I'm just getting a bit frustrated because I've been trying to solve this for months. If anybody can identify the links I will buy them a beer or three.

No chance. Whilst wiring up I have found that I am missing some of the loom

As per usual I am at the "in a couple of weeks and it'll be started" stage with no progress.

Hi Jim

Which bit of the loom are you missing because I might be able to help?

Hi Chris,

Sorry for not replying sooner. The loom was missing the subloom to the ID caps and the thermostat temp sender and cam position sender.

The guys at PDM said they should have one in this Friday. If they dont then I'll give you a shout.

Cheers
Jim

Ah yeh, I have (almost) got one of those spare.
My engine from Colin was missing that too and he had a bit of a task sourcing another one. Luckily the ancilliaries I bought with Paul R off ebay had one in it although the water temp sender plug was missing off the end so Ive had to bodge it with two spade connectors onto the sender. I havent yet swapped it over but I will probably do that tomorrow night so if the old one with the spade connectors can get you going for now, let me know.

Chris
