Gearbox mounting brackets in wrong place

I fitted the engine at the weekend. The gearbox mounting plate that attaches by rubber to the gearbox is resting on the edge of the brackets on the chassis.

I definitely can't use the holes I drilled to remove the rivets as these are above empty air. There is maybe enough overlap to put in an M5 - M6 bolt but this will be very close to the edge of both the brackets and the mounting plate.

Will this be sufficient? What else could I do?
I'm sure the engine is mounted correctly as the prop shaft is all the way in and there is no room for the engine to move back by much more than 5mm or so before the starter motor housing hits the firewall. It's a pinto engine and the bracketry is designed with that in mind.

Has anyone else had this problem? It looks as though when the brackets got welded on someone mistook the middle for the edge.

Advice appreciated.

Hi Monkey!

First thing is that the original Sierra gearbox mount is too soft to use really. You'll find that it lets the tail of the gearbox move around a fair bit and the prop can clout the inside of the tunnel - not good!

If you use the Wesfield Type 9 gearbox mount, this is solid rubber and holds the gearbox much better.

As to fitting it to the chassis, I had to make up a "cradle" arrangement out of some steel box setion and strip to locate the mount at the correct height and position. Photos in my archive I think.

I had to put some additional mouting tabs on the tunnel rails, and used a rubber (oo-er) similar to the Westfield one mentioned by Nick.

Here's a pic from my archve of what I did (partial view, anyway)

Are the seria gearbox mounts realy that soft?? Surely MK would'nt recomend them if they let the prop hit the tunnel?? I could beleve that the older the mount the softer the rubber is this the problem with the seria mounts?

Could be age related - my donor was a 70,000 mile G reg Sierra. Either way the original mount was like jelly and allowed the tail of the gearbox to move way too much. The Westy item only costs £10 and takes the worry away of prop/tunnel/me damage.

Cheers for the responses.

The pictures are really helpful.

The rubber isn't that soft but on the other hand it is 20 years old.

For a tenner I suppose I would be silly not to get a new one.

Nick, where did you get your steel from?

Under my Dad's work bench don't know where it came from, but it was there and it did the job.

I have got other bits and pieces like stainless tube for cooling pipes from a local engineering and fabrication company who I've made friends with.

This is a problem that I have.
I used the gearbox mount from the donor. And when I speed up in a tight turn the propshaft hits the chassi inside the tunnel.
Will the westfield part help?

are you entirely sure it's the prop?

for a while i thought it was the prop hitting the tunnel, mainly when drifting, but it turned out it was the alternator fan carving its way into FU2. i've since altered the bracket and alternator body to get a 13mm shorter belt on, which has completely cured the knock

it could be the prop, but i know i'm not the first to assume this, when really it's the alternator. it's worth checking

I know it´s the prop. I´m 100% sure of it.
I have "pushed" the engine and gearbox in place a few times now.
I can take a photo of it later.

I´m not sure if I can tighten the engine mounts any more. Not sure that the rubber holds for that.
