George Best
1946-2005
Former Northern Ireland and Manchester United footballer George Best has died aged 59.
Lived well and played hard off the field .. Quote "I spent 90% of my money on women, drink and fast cars. The rest I wasted,"

Probably one of the most talented football players ever!!!!
I guess he lived a very exciting life in his glory days
Am I wrong or would it be right to say that Best and Alex Higgins are among the very few that wasted their life given the talent they where born with?

I think I miss the point on this, but what made him a genius?
Yes he was good in his time, but there are far better players all round these days.
Maybe if he had trained harder and not boozed it up he could have been better. I just think there are plenty of better players out there since and now
that won't be called genius??

Ive just watched a program on george best, and it showed many sequences of him. I didnt see him dive once - just run rings around others. So perhaps
he isnt like modern players.
Lets face it, most of you wont even know what you are talking about when you criticise him as a player. Im 46 and too young to really have appreciated
him in his heyday 60's. I dont really remember anything of his career. So, if your not in your fifties or a ManU supporter, you probably dont
have all the facts.
Its easy to fault someone who's an alcoholic - i thought Best was an idiot for quite a while. However, if you cant give up drink even after a
liver transplant, then you are either suicidal, or just dont have the ability to give up the ADDICTION. Dont assume he had the free will to change
things. We cant always.
He lived 59 years as George Best, with the women, cars, fame and money, (albiet a life shortenened by drink) rather than life as an insignificant
bloke like 99.9% of us for 75 odd years.
One other Best anecdote was when he ordered champagne to be brought to his hotel room. When the waiter got there, he found Best in bed with the
current Miss World and money scattered around the room from his casino winnings. The waiter said "where did it all go wrong mr Best". He
said some years later that the waiter may have seen things in him he couldnt at the time.

Couldn't agree more Steve - time and time again the voice of the media speaks through ignorant mouths. I'm no fan of football - over-paid
ballet dancers... as you say even faced with a tackle he jumped over and carried on! RIP G.Best... footballer and gentleman sadly afflicted with a

Perhaps most of his critisizers (is this an English word?) are a bit jealous!!
I hope everyone remembers him for what he did for football and not because of the disease he had!

It's a shame for his family, as much as it would be for anyone, and he did used to write a good column in the Mail.
But, I (and not being a football fan) think he's more famous for his alcoholism than his football.

It depends Simon,most people of my generation on this side of the channel remembers George Best as one of the first football players who brought pure
entertaiment into football with a skill never seen before!!!
He lasted only 6 years at the top (an amazing long time considering the way he lived) and had icons like B.Charlton and S. Matthews before him to be
compared with.
For the media overhere he was not interesting enough after his Man.period except on a few occasions when he apeared drunk for a TV interview or when
he got the liver transplant.
So I guess that people in GB have a far better insight in his later life than most people in the rest of Europe!
He was a great football player-period!!

Comparing George Best with modern players is similar to comparing Jim Clark with modern Grand Prix drivers. Different time, different equipment. In
George's case he would be competing with players who have had Nike etc design balls that are easier to work with.
Best had skills that few players even now have. Name some wingers who are half as good. Name me an England International who could take on and beat 4
players in a European Cup Final.
If people hacked him down, instead of lashing out or pushing his forehead into their face he got up and at the next available opportunity he ran
'round them with the ball to make them look stupid.
The sad thing is that as a naive kid he wasn't looked after by United and by the time he was old enough to take control of his life booze had
taken control of him. From that day 'til now he was controlled by alcohol. Anyone who has beaten an alcohol addiction is welcome to criticise
him.
Thank God clubs tend to take a bit more care of young kids now, although that's more about protecting investment I think.....
