Clutch cable

i am reusing the clutch cable from my donor sierra and was wondering what the rubbery bit at the pedal end does, is it better to keep it or replace it with a solid copy? Thanks

I've used the standard cable - I removed the rubber collar and reversed the cable, made a U shaped steel with a hole and slot to locate the cable onto the clutch pedal.
Used some washers to stop the clutch cable dropping down the bulkhead tube.
I used it as standard, apart from removing one of the collars, so that if it broke it would be a straight fit of a new one.
The inner cable is too long so I made an extension tube comprising of an M10 / M12 bolt, drilled through and slotted to allow the cable to be pushed in from the side.
The bolt then screws into the gearbox mounting face with a locknut, this allows adjustment.
I then welded a slotted tube to the bolt and welded a washer to the tube so that all the slots line up.
Finally, I slotted an M4 nyloc nut and fitted it so the domed part would contact the clutch operating arm, to act as a pivot else the cable would fatigue or come out of the arm.
I allowed the cable to go in as big a radius as possible and P clipped it to a tapped M10 bolt.

Having said all that - if you do a formum search I think that an alternative (Cortina ?) has been mentioned that has an adjuster fitted to the clutch end which may be a simpler option.
