MK Indy with aluminium panels
Does anybody know if u can build, or has anybody built an Indy with aluminium panels, sides, bonnet rear-end etc? I would like to build one with a
more rugged look true to the original 7's. Will there be problems with the fitting, since I assume the aluminium panels are somewhat thinner
than the fibreglass panels that come with the kit?

If you look at www.ne7ers.co.uk there's a very special ali MK on there that someone's done - ali passenger tonneau and everything - very
nice!
Go to the site, click on cars of the nutters and look for Dave K's car (gulf colours)

which grade and thickness of aluminium did richjenkin use, ns3 or ns4 as i intend to use ns4 1.2mm thick as its marine grade

I'm using ali 1.5mm halfhard on our indy. You could get away with thiner ali I think.. Thiner would probably get the weight down when compared
with the fiberglass parts.
Just remeber to tell MK you want the rear hoop around the back of the chassis, as this is not there on fibreglass versions... Else you'll have
nothing to attach the rear pannel to..

Hi,I think that my side panels and bonnet are 1mm standard ally and I've had no problems.
If you go to thicker say over 1.2mmm I think it will be difficult to work with even if annnealed.
I just worked mine as it came and I dont find it too soft for its use and the weight is lighter but not flimsy.
I would not swop mine for fibreglass as I think that its easier to work with and doesn't chip and scratches polish out easier.
I did use 1.5mm for the footwell tops and rear bulkhead.
I think you'll see some pics in my archive.
I personally prefer the ally sides look and think it looks slightly nicer than some of the clean plasticky Indys,nice as they are.
Obviously its a personal taste thing and it depends how your fabbing skills are,i'm pretty good and I still messed up my first attempt at a
bonnet.

I did my indy with 20swg ali. As said above to get the weight down.

Congrats on a job well done, Dean C. Thats more or less how I would like mine to look. Maybe with some more old school wheels.
The pics of your car brings up another question. How come the height of the bonnet on the Indys look so different on different cars? Yours looks nice
and low, but some of them look almost like a landrover. Is it because some of them are lowered more than others, or is it maybe because of engine size
etc.?

Hi,I would have loved some 15inch minilites but the cost is probably double what I paid for good TSW wheels and Yokohama tyres.
The bonnet height is governed by the scuttle and nosecone and should be standard to all Indy's,although mine looks lower without the scoop and
maybe the solid colours on fibreglass look bigger.
Some Locosts look very tall and this is usually down to having the scuttle too tall, and square on the sides.
Once I've finished a project why do I start another?

Would it be possible to have the rear panel and scuttle made from ali as well? Obviously trickier to do, but would look so good when finished!

Anythings possible, it just depends on your levels of skill (have a look at Trev D's locost), or how deep your pockets are

Amazing ride Trev D has built...but I am afraid I don't have the skills to build anything near that. I would only trust myself to bend the side
panels and maybe the rear panels...but a nose-cone, no way. Anyway, it looks like it is possible to use some ali on an MK instead of the plastic,
which brings me a little closer to making the call to MK...

I saw that car in a magazine a while back - very, very, very nice!
However, as I recall, the guy's got years of experience working for a classic car restorer, specialising in ali bodywork.
All I want is the original 7 look, with raw ali body and GRP wings and nose cone.
(If I can achieve that, there'll be a set of MK bodywork for sale, never used, caringly stored in my spare room!)

How much do you think he'd want to put me a back panel and scuttle together?
I've seen the photo's and it's exactly what I'd aspire to if I was talented at anything to do with fabrication!
