just fitted the column with the donor wheel. Woth the nylok that holds the wheel done up should I still be able to see part of the spring that is
inside the upper column?
thanks

Not really - I had the same issue when I stripped my column apart and removed all of the unnecessary gubbins foe height adjustment.
There's a little plastic collar that goes between the steering wheel and the ignition assembly (or ali collar, if yuo've trimmed it down
like me). It has a small tab on one side and fits in a certain way - it's part of the idicator self cancelling system.
Fit this and when you do the bolt up again, you should find the spring is contracted and the lower column pulls up more. I'm thinking on a way
of replacing the plastic collar with something a bit more purposeful (a piece of ali tube trimmed to shape maybe)
