wheels & tyres again

need your expertise guys motorworld have an offer on at the moment a set of tsw razor wheels 6 by 15 with yokohama s036 195 50 15 tyres for 299.96
being a cheeky get i've got 10% off for cash they hate you walking out with the offer of a tyre upgrade to a539 195 50hr15 at £7 a wheel.
problem the offset is only et35 spoke to martin and he says i need to get the same offset as a focus.what is the offset on a focus. or can i get away with spacing these wheels if so what thickness spacers do i need.
by the way demon want 399 for the same package but again tsw only make a et35 offset for all fords

Found this website

http://www.tyresave.co.uk/fitment.html#FORD

which gives wheel dimensions for seemingly all makes of car.

the suggested offset is in the range 35 to 38 for the ford focus

You need to confirm what wheel width MK are quoting with the offset. I seem to remember they were saying the Focus offset was et48 on a 7" rim. If you are using a 6" rim the same offset would be about et36. What you need to check is that the rim/tyre does not stick out past the rear arch as this is a SVA fail.

what would be useful is if there was a chart/list (I'm happy to build one if supplied the relevant info) for wheel offset & suitable tyres for different rim widths.

I have done some searching and it appears that front and rear wheel drive cars normally have different offsets.

Ford four studs are 108pcd but the et offset varies. It appears to be higher on wider rims, does this mean the extra width in the rim goes on the outside of the wheel?

The website linked above shows ford wheels at 35-38 offset. presumably standard wheels are 5.5-6" wide.

Someone above mentioned an offset of et48 for 7" rims (off a focus).

what does et stand for (I haven't found a definition of this) and what unit is the offset measured in? (eg mm?) imperial, like the rim or metric, like a tyre?

Can you just work out the correct offset by adding 4/5 to the offset value for every 1" wider your rim is?

Will the location of the offset affect the leverage onthe suspension from the wheel? how important is this?

Comments/correction/clarification anyone?

Ned.

Tony,

Go for it mate. I bought the same wheels from Motorworld a few weeks back. They fit ok. I soke to Martin before ordering them and he said Focus wheels were ET38 offset on 6 1/2 inch rims. The TSW Razors I got are 6 inch rims and fill the arches nicely.

Also talk to Bob as he got a set of wheels and tyres for £250.

Ned,
Take a look at Rob Lanes site he has information about wheels on there. I think ET offsets are a German offset measurement standard.

Paul,

thanks for the tip, anyone who wants the answers to my questinos above do a search on users for rob lane and loko at htis site!!

My only unanswered question is:
When going for a larger rim does the offset stay the same?
if so what side does the increased width of the rim go to? inside/outside/evenly spread.

Cheers,

Ned.

Be careful when purchasing wheels for the Indy cos if you go too wide the inside rim will hit the shock absorber! Mine are 6x15's E38 (i think) and they fit a treat.

If the hub face of the wheel is in the centre of the rim, mid way between the inner and outer edges of the rim, the wheel would have zero offset, 0ET. If the mounting face is towards the outside rim the wheel will have offset (I think positive) and the value is the distance measured in mm. Therefor a wheel with a 7" rim and 50ET will stick out from the car about the same as a 6" rim with 38ET. What you are looking for on the Indy is a wheel that does not come outside the rear arch edge.

When asked Martin K about wheel size he said that 15" work best with profile no less than 50 and 195, poss max 205 width. If you go for a bigger wheel and very low profile tyres the ride is very hard and the wheels are prone to tramline.

bikkel,

Have you managed to get any of the OZ's. Apparently there was a manufacturing fault and all new deleveries of wheels have been delayed. I have been told it could be months before they are in stock again! I'm not in a rush, but wold like them in september
