front wing stay distance

Evening all

Plenty of head scratching tonight trying to get the wing stays fitted. i've read the threads i could find and sownloaded pictures and armed with the photos headed off to the garage.

got the stays on fine and even got them bent reasonably evenly but here is the snag

The wheels are 15" with 195/50 tyres. The two stay tubes that come up from the hub seem to be quite a distance (12mm approx) from the inside tyre edge.

The distance I left between top of tyre and flat stay bar one bent is approx 15mm.

with the wing popped on the top of the stay it doesn't sit evenly over the tyre the inside edge has a gap you can get your fingers in and the outside edge there is hardly a gap.

It seems I need to get the two stay tubes nearer the wheel but when I tried tapping it with with my trusty hammer the whole stay justs pivots around the bolt on the lower ball joint even though it's tightened as much as i can/dare.

So to anyone with that size wheel/tyre combo how close are your stay bars to the inner edge of the wheel and if a lot nearer then 12mm how did you bend them nearer as i don't want to use severe heat due to possible damage to wheel, tyre or surrounding kit.

Any advice on bending the round tube whilst still fitted to get the front wing further out or photos or preferably both would be much welcome.

I'm off into hospital tomorrow for a kidney operation so please provide as much help as you can so once i'm back out i can get cracking.

Sorry for the long post but I'd really like to get this last pice of body work boxed off so I can crack on with the electrics and interior.

Cheers
Nigel

to adjust mine, i took them off the car and used heat on the round tube to bend it closer to the wheel.

you'll need to bend it a bit, put it back on, check it and then probably adjust.

it's a bit of work, but it makes the front end look a lot neater.

To get the round tubing on the wing stays closer to the tyre, we just elongated the hole that attaches to the bottom ball joint, to allow the whole unit to be moved closer to the tyre sidewall.

PS - We also cranked the flat bar to be able to get the wing sitting central. This picture shows our second or third attempt at bending it. Took us about four attempts to finally get it right, although we are perfectionists.

Hi all me again

Before I go off and make a nasty job of my front wing stays one last question.

Looking at all your photos you all seem to have the older style wings without the buldges on the inner edge. It's got me wondering if MK have changed the stay design to go with the new stlye wing.

If anyone has any info on the subject i'd be grateful cos tomorrow I'm in the garage bending stays this way and that.

Before going several of you have mentioned that it took several goes to get the stays right. From that i take it that you can bend the flat bit back straight without it snapping off? Again any tips much appreciated as if I snap them they'll be tantrums in the garage

Cheers all
Nigel
