MK Indy + Zetec

Is there anyone building an Indy with a Zetec motor?

If so can you use/modify/adapt the MK Pinto engine mounts to suit the Zetec?

Any problems other than normal with this choice of engine?

Any info appreciated!

Cheers

Nick

i believe siert and zetec are building indy's with this engine....

ignition springs to mind as a possible problem, assuming you run webers and don't want to use the standard injection system, which is probably too big to fit under the bonnet.

The block is a newer design so I doubt the engine mounts would fit.

Tom,

Which engine have you got, is it a 105 or 130PS unit?

Are you using injection or carbs?

How much will it cost to fit this engine - i.e. engine, carbs, ingnition system, gearbox mods etc?

Lots of questions - any info would be really useful.

Cheers

Nick

zetec aftermarket injection.

I just heard from a friend that YKC manufacture a small manifold suitable for the standard injectors incl omex mapped ecu and loom for around 850 pounds ex vat! and you can always upgrade from there!!!I'm sure it will fit under the bonnet. have a look:

ps. have alook on my site for details on waterpump, sump and daihatsu alternator.

I fitted a 2ltr Zetec and MT75 g/box. I made patterns for my engine mounts which Martin fabricated for me, he might have keep the patterns and make some more if needed. Problem with any new type of engine is the need for an ignition ECU. The aftermarket ones from Emerald/Omex etc should come with some software to get you up and running, and make sure they can be set up on any rolling road (unlike Weber who need to go to a Weber dealer). They are easy to fit and get working once you understand what is happening. Also think about whether you want injection as now is the time to plan for that too. Dave Walker of CCC mag does a very good book on such things and I think is published by Haines. Also check out the cost of ECU and throttle bodies from people like Jenvey as the cost is not as much as some people think. The only moan I had about YKC was that they tried suggest that you will need a cat fitted on 92-95 engines and that their kit covers this, the fact is that you do not at the moment need a cat for this age of engine. Have a look on my pic's page for my instal. I used Jenvey throttle bodies, Emerald ECU, Vx GTE injectors (s/h) and Vx GTE fuel pump (s/h) = 175bhp from standard £300 engine.

Thanks for all the info guys - useful stuff to know.

Zetec - I've found a 2.0L unit for a similar price. Do you have a ball park figure for the complete installation including TBs, ECU etc?

Cheers again guys!

I got new TB+ECU for about £950 from Spyder Engineering tel. 01733 205639, s/h injectors and pump £50, pre and post pump filters £50, fuel lines about £10 (8mm copper and high presure rubber), Pipercross filter £45 and few bits of wire and connectors poss another £15.

As I say the additional cost compared to fitting new Webers is small compared to the benifits.

People are sometimes scared off injection as they think it too complicated. The ECU will tell you if a sensor has failed, you can test an injector is working by running it out of the TB into a jar and that's it. The ECU also runs the cooling fan, fuel pump and controls the tick over. Parts are cheap and in the long term fuel savings and less engine wear due to over fueling will save you the slight additional cost.

Thanks Zetec, it certainly looks like a feasible option!

Right then.

Been looking at the engine today. nicley stripped dowmn on the bench!

You can use the standard flywheel (1.8zetec) And standard clutch cover (1.8zetec)

You'll have to source a pinto clutch plate though. (1.8ohv). As the splines in the zetec clutch are'nt big enough.
The pinto release bearing will have to be used also. (1.8ohv)

The hole in the zetec ctrank is big enough to allow the type 9 to go straight in.

A pinto starter will have to be used insted of the zetec starter.

Pinto engine mount don't come near to the zetec. And the zetec mounts are in the front of the block and pintos are in the centre. So you'll have to fabricate some kind of mounts.

Its a superb engine though. I'm hoping to fit the engine with the efi plemum fitted. Will have to buldge the bonnet though. Fingers crossed.

Ive got loads of pictures of the strip down.

1 warning. Dont block up the crank breather outlet. Youre better off fitting a catch tank and oil sepperator.

B3, whats a 1.8 ohv? did you mean OHC?

And what about the spigot bearing?

Cheers

Chris

BTW have you got the neons on the MK yet?

Note to all: I really don't know when to leave well alone. I tried to get clever with the mods, then when they gave me a lifeline to see the error of my ways, I tried to incite more trouble via u2u. So now I'm banned, never to return again. They should have done it years ago!

The Sierra spigot bearing just taps in and fits fine. The crank breather on the earlier engines work on a negative presure system and the valve will only open when there is some suck from the inlet. Mine is not connected and vents fine from the cam cover outlet with no output from the block outlet. Don't forget to make sure the water pump turns the correct way for your alternator/pump belt config.

OHV OHC blah blah! He he!

Neons were the first thing on the chassis!

Just need room for my 16" subs and a posotive feed to my flashy washer jets and i'll be ready to go!

Bigg it up mannn! Bo selecta! init!

Got the earlyer XR2i engine with the triangular drive belt setup. So you've just put a breather filter on the cam cover?

Do your plugs foul up at all? My mates calibra was set up like that and the plugs were covered in oil in an instant. Was leaking through the piston rings.

The crankcase breather on the near side of the block is just left open, nothing comes out because the valve attached to the block never gets sucked open. Breathing thru the cam cover has been fine and is connected to a small catch tank, I've never had to top up the oil so it must be staying in the engine. Also no problems with plugs. Don't forget to use Ford zetec oil, nice and runny and stops those valves sticking, nice and cheap as well (recommended by Dunnel tuning). Also try and fit the Ford filter if room allows and don't bother with an oil cooler.

What oil filter are you using then?

Standard size motorcraft jobbie?

The standard filter is Long. I'm sure a cvh filter is smaller and is exacly the same thread.

Standard Motorcraft Mondeo filter. I mounted my engine slightly off centre and means the filter goes under the steering shaft. I made up my mounts with the filter fitted so was easy to check for clearance. CVH unit should be fine, lots of people fit the smaller filter.
