roll bar clamp

All,

I need some feedback from the forum on a universal roll bar clamp system I am working on. See pictures below.

The clamp is ~50 mm (2" wide. The bracket can be drilled to mount water bottles, cameras, fire extinguishers, weights, ect.

Your feedback on the design and potential uses would be appreciated.

Had me concerned for a sec there. When I read title, I assumed it was a clamp to hold roll bar to car

As for suggestions, why make the bar clamp part from third sections when two will do. Two sections, 1 hinge would be the way to go, with rubber backing to protect roll bar paint and provide damping for any cameras mounted.

It needs some rubber to stop it chafing (fnarr fnarr).
Is the aluminium thick enough to tap? If so that would be more aesthetically pleasing than the big nylocs - obviously not as strong.

As for uses.

  • Bulletcam (right up to professional video camera) mount
  • luggage rack fixings
  • Roof rack (for those with a full cage)
  • Gun rack mount (sorry cheap crack at southern USA stereotypes)
  • Spotlight mount (assuming you're aiming at the offroad/dunebuggy market as well as the 7's

p.s. how much are you thinking of selling them for?

A bit like a doughty clamp then?
- Available in std, slimline, and lightweight versions. In a varity of configiations, for 50mm nominal diameter.
- If you concerned about paintwork, just place a turn of gaff around the bar before hand.

Sorry to an arse, but it does seam like we're reinventing the wheel.
- Why not just do a bulk-buy on 100 doughty's and resell them. Unless this is just a design project for the yourself.

I like the 2 wings at the top that also mount the bracket but not sure about the third lower one.

Overall its a neat idea.

not necessarily - if you can make these clamps for 1/10 th price of doughty clamp you may be onto a winner.

Im not saying dont do it. But at 40pence each (doughtys are £4 max) your never going to be raking it in.

Im just saying is all.

Daniel, where did you get the £4 price from?

I've just checked and they are £18.80 each plus carriage and VAT.

clamps

All,

Thanks for the feedback.

Iank, I agree that the nylocs are not attractive. I could go with shorter bolts and use barrel nuts to improve the looks.

The cost is still being worked out. A lot will depend on the fasteners used. The SS bolts and nylocs are more expensive than the extrusion.

The 1/4" thick mounting bracket is overkill, I agree. I am sourcing 1/8" thick 6063 aluminum for that part now.

I am also contemplating making this in a plastic extrusion to reduce costs.

I use a clamp from my drumkit, it's normaly used to mount one of the Tom drums to the Rack that surrounds the kickdrum.

it's the black one in this picture. made by the Osan brand, but there are also others, they're not very expensive and very strong, quick release and since the rack tubes are normaly cromed they won't damage you rollbar!
it fits an early sylva striker perfect!
