I have decided on an MK Indy
After much resratch I have decided on a MK indy build, now I need to decide on engine choice. DO MK sell engines and has anyone any ideas on prices
aprox for say a pinto, zetec, bike engine 2nd hand?
Also are there any builders in the south west?
thanks

Congratulations, wise choice. MK do sell engines but don't consider anything other than a BEC.......

How do mate,
I'd have a good look around at engines. I'd fit something simple like a 2.0 Zetec if you want a relatively easy route.
If you feel adventurous and have facilities for fabricating bits then how about something unusual, like an MX5 motor?
I certainly wouldn't use one of those girly bike engines
I'm in Ilfracombe, North Devon although my car is in Warwickshire for now.

they do sell engines but may be easier/cheaper to get something from another source.
what they do sell though are engine cradles to ahng the engine into the car and bolt it in. each engine requires a differnt cradle or mounts and MK
will need to know about this when doing your order i suspect.

I would like a bike engine as I want to do some track days but given I am a novice builder and on a budget I wonder if this is running before I can
walk. Is there much of a price between the zetec/pinto option and a bike engine?

a decnet bike packa e with clocks can be anything between say £700 to £1200 when looking at baldes and r1's. all depends how old and what spec
and condition you want.
maybe read up on the blades, R1's etc and make a choice from there. I went for a 2003 R1 fuel injected 5PW

Sounds like a good choice for you. To answer your question on the other thread, I've become a firm believer that the roll bar on any one of
these cars should be to the MSA design i.e.with diaganal and backstays rather than the bolt-in type as seen on some MKs, including my old one.
I'm giving serious thought to selling everyday runaround 1.6 Sierra if you'd be interested as a donor. At least that way you'd be
certain that everything worked and was in good nick.
This really wasn't meant to sound like I was digging for a sale but it obviously does. Sorry!

I reckon bike engines are easier to fit than car engines. Price wise, it really depends on which engine you want. Older blades, CBR1000 and
ZX9R's to name but a few, can be had for as little as £300. The more modern engines obviously go for lots more.
Get in touch with Malc at Yorkshire Engines for more info and prices. Never bought an engine from him but he's a great bloke and will certainly
give you the info you want. Alternatively, source one yourself through the various classified and auction sources such as e-bay etc.

I don't see why a bec will be any more difficult to build.
Are there any implications with the new SVA for reverse gear? If so it's worth considering how you'll get around this as part of your
decision on what to use.
If you can get away without a reverse I'd go for a bike engine.

Remember is it not from April next year that all cars will have to have a reverse gear to pass the SVA(IVA). so you will have to finish within 8
months, or fit a reverse
Something else to add to your build costs
Cheers

Zetec's on ebay for 99p.... spanks a bike engine all the way....
Bike engines easier to fit than car engines?? Wouldn't have said so myself and with the SVA ending soon and IVA requiring reverse my vote would
be a zetec.....

I'm biased, but a ZX9R E engine is a cracking engine, simple non injection, cheap as chips, MK do a cradle for it and there are loads of
completed ones out there to reference with

Thanks for the replies guys all good stuff. I think I need to conduct more research on this one. How tricky is it to fit a reverse gear though on a
BEC? Can you buy a kit?
Also I cant find a link tot he colours of bodywork that MK offer on their site.. anyone have a link or know?

reverse option is either a quaiffe reberse box fitted inline with the prop, approx £400, or an electric reverse, a few people make kits around £300

Having done a Zetec and heavily involved with fitting an R1 i'd say yes the bike engine was easier myself. If a reverse is needed for IVA then
it can be fitted so would hardly see it as the deciding factor.

I have a Nissan CA18DET turbo as an engine in my car, that takes a ton of room in the engine bay. There are so many hoses and wires I can't
identify anything, and it's hard to reach bolts! Where I am, there is not a great choice of car engines that are RWD that don't require
adapting to a trans.
I would go BEC just so I can see things and keep them clean easier. There are plenty of options for reverse, from what I've seen.
I am not basing any of this on driving however, because I'm not quite done yet.
What about the longevity and clutch issues though? Is the BEC harder on those?

I've gone for a carb'd r1 lump in mine.
Picked it up for 500 quid all together.
You couldn't pwn your way out of a wet paper bag, with "PWN ME!!" written on it, from the "pwned take-away" which originally contained one
portion of chicken tikka pwnsala and the obligatory free pwnpadom.

Track days BEC road use CEC unlessyou want to be completely deaf within a year, BEC do accelerate faster as a rule but drink petrol, deafen u stop u
mooving backwards can be more expensive to fit and set up, I wouldnt go for the Pinto as its a dated engine plenty of tuning parts though look at
Zetec or Duratec or the red top all highly tuneable and will all be in a position once rolling out out do a bec in a straight line once they get
rolling

hi James,
good choice on the Indy - I just ordered mine yesterday!
As for engine... as suggested earlier, speak to Malc at Yorkshire Engines. I've ordered a 2008 R1 from him and he was really helpful. Number is:
07960 011 585
As for the reverse... I enquired about this and was told not to worry "can always hire a kit for SVA"
Good luck with whatever you choose
