ive put my r1 engine in using plated threaded bar, is this strong enough?

depends on diameter of the bar.

you can purchase 8.8 threaded studding - same rating as 8.8 bolts.

As above, i'd use at least 8.8 threaded studding rather than some cheap stuff from B&Q.
