Confused about what doner to get??
Hi guys,
I've finally got my dad on side. He does a lot of driving round streets and tents to come across things (his last boat was just in someones
drive not for sale, knocked on the door and bought it,lol.) so hes gonna try and keep and eye out for a suitable doner for me. As per my other topic,
ideally I want to build a zetec indy, so what do I need.
Things I've sussed out so far,
-Non power steering
-Not bothered about rear discs or drums
-What gear box do I need? If either is one better than the other?
-Have any of the sierra engines got the exhausts on the same side as a zetec, so that I could use it (maybe just for mockup) til I get hold of a
zetec.
Any other nasties that I need to look out for.
Ideally I want it age related plated so need to get most parts from doner.
Also would any of my engines options require a raised bonnet?
Sorry for all the questions, if just seems the more I read on herethe more confused I get.
Hopefully my dad will come up trumps so I can start getting it stripped and reconned and stuff while I save up for the kit.
Cheers guys

where are you mate?
i have a mk2 escort steering rack you can have for £8 plus postage. only thing is i can't send it for a while. That would be one less thing to
worry about
I'm not a ford man so i can't really answer a lot of your other questions some one will be along soon

If you are really set on fitting a zetec then almost any Sierra will do. That said only the gearbox and rear hubs and a few relays live on from my
donor! I suspect it is just as easy to source the bits without a donor, but if you do want an age related plate you will need a V5 off a
"donor". I have a later MT75 gearbox but the earlier Type 9 is just as usable. You don't mention your budget. If things are tight
then try and get a donor with a decent gearbox and diff. I would as a matter of course either refurb or buy recon brake calipers and master cylinders.
MK will swap the steering rack and front uprights when you get the kit. Steer clear of a 4x4 as most parts cannot be used. If things are tight you
could fit a Pinto from the donor which does make for a easier cheaper build if the engine in the donor is in good condition.

As said any Sierra really, without PAS is better but a base model 1.6 or 1.8.
Get the donor then loose fit a zetec, don't forget a 1.8 zetec is easier to fit than a 2L.
Better to keep the donor till the end of the build.. somewhere to keep all the crap and a valuable resource for all sorts of buts and bobs.
From the Sierra i used diff, shafts all the brakes, front uprights, calipers, steering system complete, wiring harness, bits of trim, fasteners,
brackets etc etc...
sold the lights, 1.6 engine, shell and got me money back

the 1.8 CVH engine does
as does the 2.0 DOHC engine
but i doubt it would be a simple swap to fit a zetec later, not hard, just not a simple drop in.

I went the same route with buying an old Sierra for transmission, brakes, steering column. It's a few years ago but I think my biggest concern
was getting the right diff ratio and there are quite a few to choose from. I bought a 2ltr Pinto with 3.92 diff. The Haynes manual has some info on
different ratios - but probably just as much expertise on the forum.

mmm doner meat and chips,lol.
How much difference does it make if I fit the wrong diff? I suppose it would be easy enough to change after registration tho wouldn't it. To be
honest if it moves when I finish it Il be hapy.
So I can get pretty much get any old sierra whatever the gearbox or engine.
Is it best to change the engine number and things to the zetec engine number before I try registring the kit to help with the age related plate stuff?
Hopefully things can move along a bit faster now, Il be able to refurb and prep the sierra stuff while I finish saving up for the kit.
Thanks for the replies

Dont worry swapping the engine number. You will use enough of the Sierra to get an age related plate.
