Pinto to Duratec Conversion
HMSMotorsport - 3/7/12 at 04:31 PM

Hello all,

First off please allow me to apologise if this has already been covered. I did a search but couldn't find anything obvious. Please feel free to point me in the right direction if need be!

Anyway, I will soon have in my possession half a Tiger Avon race car. It currently has a wheezy single cam pinto engine and we are wanting to replace this with a duratec or similar. The goal is 200bhp and this will be achieved using throttle bodies and ECU.

So, my questions are:

How easy is it to fit the duratec to the pinto / avon chassis?

Will the Duratec bolt up to the Type 9 gearbox with ease?

Is there anything crucial that I'm missing out on here?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

James

Hi James

I'm embarking on this journey right now, and am very happy to help/collaborate. I'm keeping aspects of my transplant on the forum (just search for my name - nearly all my opened threads are about this) and I cover off in some detail what I'm doing on my blog as well (Furyrebuild.co.uk). Also, check out the flakmonkey thread

There is considerable work and expense to undertake, but it's not difficult.
From my experience, you will need:

More than happy to chat.

Hi, I did this last year and whilst there are a few little problems there's nothing that is too hard. All my notes, questions etc were on the Tiger Owners Club Website and a few of the links are below:

Duratec clutch cable issue (go hydraulic if you can):

Tiger Duratec engine mount info (I actually had to get these remade as they weren't quite long enough):

Hope that helps, fair bit of reading but should give you most if not all info. If you need anything else give me a shout.

Thanks for the advice chaps, I'm posting from my iPhone ATM so will look in more detail later. Looks like quite a job. I take it Zetec is no better? Still need 200bhp!

To get the bigger power in a Zetec it will cost a lot more than a duratec.

If you are after 200hp Duratec is the way, you will need Throttle bodies and will need to change the cams.

I am expecting about 180hp from mine but I haven't changed out the cams.

Look for an ST150 engine as these come without a duel mass fly wheel (which is good) and the EGR is already blanked off.

Getting the clutch sorted is quite tricky, I ended up with an RS Turbo uprated pressure plate, Pinto racing friction plate, SAAB thrust bearing, with hydraulic cylinder.

Using a Megasquirt 2 V3 ECU with no EDIS.

I'm currently building an Avon with the Duratec. I'm using GSXR 1000 throttle bodies and Omex 600. I found that I had to relocate the alterator on the offside of the engine as it was hitting the chassis rail. I made the engine mounts, which if you can weld are quite straight forward (but I am a plater by trade). I'm having a custom exhaust made in a couple of weeks (£1000 inc cat) as Tiger told me that their headers wouldn't fit and would need modifying. I also have some cams to go in after IVA.
To be honest I got all my info off here and the Tiger website. Some very helpful, clued up people around the forums, so any questions just ask and you have very swift replies!!
