13" wheels
matthew slade - 22/4/14 at 12:22 PM

I have read lots of posts about not being able to fit 13" wheels to the rear of an Avon, but I have also seen lots of cars running 13" wheels. How much modification is required to get them to fit? I have sierra drums on the rear.

What do they say the issue is with fitting them to an avon? id have thought as long as you have the correct offset wheel, then a 13" would go straight over the drum no problems. Typically the issue with 13" wheels is inside clearance from disc calipers

I believe it is the width of the wishbones rather than the brakes

I'm in the middle of fitting rear sierra discs/calipers and 13in Minilites . Had to fab top and bottom wishbones ,20mm shorter along with the driveshafts . The other option was to put wider rear arches on to take the 8in Minilites.

Width of wishbones are the problem ont he striker. A little shaving and jiggeray-pokery and I think you can get them to fit.

I have not dont it myself but will be trying to do so next winter.

20mm shorter whishbones sounds odd, is that just because of the offset of the wheels? What ET are your minilites?

I was assuming I would need to narrow the wishbones not shorten them. I already have wide arches.

Top & bottom wishbones need to be altered. Someone on the Tiger forum has done this.

I know some have modified them and some haven't. So, I assume, which can be dangerous, that the offset and shape of wheel can play a part in this. I guess the key is to find a wheel with the biggest space behind it and an offset the works, alternatively it be possible to use spacers, but I would prefer not to.

Well I have got some 13" 10J wheels and tyres to fit. Required the top wishbone to be modified only. It is still the same length and none of the geometry has changed.

Very happy with the results. Testing at Donnington on Thursday will see if dropping the wheel size has made a difference or not.

Do you have any pictures of the mod to the wishbone by any chance & do u have wider arches?

matthew slade - 29/5/14 at 06:47 PM

Hi Neil
I am going to prepare a 'how to' guide with photos and some drawings and dimensions. However, huge caveat, it will all depend on what brand, style and size of rims you select.

I have managed to get it to work without fitting wider arches, but I have reduced my rear wheels to a more sensible 8J. I did have 10J fitted but they stuck out slightly and would have required a slightly wider arch (about 20mm wider).

Finally, I have no idea what a standard Avon rear lower wishbone looks like, when I bought my car it had already been modified with adjustable lower arms.

Depending on where you are geographically, you are welcome to come and see it.

Regards

Matthew

Matthew,

Where are you located as I'm in Newcastle area.

I look forward to seeing your how to with the pictures. It is something I want to do, but I don't have car on road as yet, so that's my priority at the moment.

Neil
