Looking at fitting an external oil cooler to the R1, I want to fit one in addition to the standard one so will be using a sandwich plate behind the
oil filter.
Can anyone point me in the right direction, part numbers, size of matrix, suppliers, prices.
Much obliged.
Hi Andy,
There are pics in my photo archive in the 5VY mods folder on how we have installed the oil cooler. There is not enough space to fit the sandwich plate
under the oil filter, so we have left the filter as is, and removed the original oil cooler of the bike and have fitted the sandwich plate there.
Works fine (note that the oil lines are pointing forward in reality, this is only a trial fitting picture...).
Oil cooler take-off
The parts we have used are (Merlin motorsport codes included):
- Mocal oil cooler 235mm matrix. 16 Row. -10JIC male unions on the top (M-OC16-10JIC)
- Mocal sandwich block with integral thermaostat. Thermostat opens at 80C. Ports tapped 1/2BSP (M-OTSP-1)
- Mocal cover plate (mushroom) 13/16 UNF (M-CP-13/16UNF)
- ADAPTOR 1/2BSP X -10JIC ALLY (to fit between the sandwich plate and the union) (G-741-08-10D) - 2 pieces
- approx. 2 meters of -10JIC oil hose
- -10JIC straight female fittings (G-236-0110) - 2 pieces
- -10JIC 90 degree female fittings (G-336-9010) - 2 pieces
Plus we have modified a Yamaha oil filter adapter that we used to fit the sandwich plate to the engine. I can not remember the thread size, but it
will be obvious when you look at the fittings of the oil filter and the oil cooler. You will understand...
We have not bought all of these from Merlin, but some from a local rally shop. The Merlin sourced parts arrived fine and quickly though.
I hope this helps!
Regards,
Gergely
I have a 16 row 235mm wide cooler, made by some Swedish company (Setrab). Mounted tight to the front of my Radiator.
It used to over cool the oil so I needed to install a Mocal oil thermostat (Merlin motorsport) with 1/2inch push on fittings, which sorted things out
a treat.
I think that these guys are probably the best value.
The challenge (for me) was getting sorting out all the threads as there are any number of different combinations and permutations.
Matt
Hi Jedi racing cars make a nice adaptor with lines and fittings and you want a nice hayabusa oil cooler rad which i have £75 inc delivery
cheers malc

Ok, i've read quite a few of these r1 oil cooler posts and i just seem to be accumulating parts that dont fix
Can anyone tell me the size of the union that i need to buy in order to screw on a takeoff into where the original R1 cooler connected to?
Its driving me absolutely mental, i've now got 2 takeoffs and a wrong size union that i can screw into anything.
Help much appreciated otherwise i'm setting fire to it in the garage!
all you need is what Gergely has written. Have you got a Yamaha oil filter union? you need one to fit a takeoff when you remove the original oil cooler
After posting this the other day i had a bit of a brain wave, i have a spare R1 engine so decided to steel the oil filter union off that. The only problem i found was that the Nut part of the union seemed too big so whenever i tightened one of my take offs it just never sat tight enough against the engine.....i THINK i've managed to find a workaround for now, just waiting on some an10 90deg adapters since it's too tight against the chassis with the straight ones.
You need to trim down one side of the union. I think it's the side that screws into the engine. Can't fully remember. Though it was obvious
when I was under the car fitting it all.
I also had to machine a few millimetres off the inside of the mocal oil takeoff as like you said it wouldn't nip up to the engine as it was
hitting the union nut
could anyone confirm the thread size of the adaptor that was used to bolt the cooler plate to where the standard water cooler went?
The cover plate I bought was M20 x 15 if that helps.....
Definitely M20 x 1.5 thread on the oil cooler (same as the oil filter).
Some discussion HERE
I see, so you bought a male to make m20 1.5 adaptor screwed that into the block and the fitted your cover plate or am I missing something.

Thats what I used above, it's got a very thin nut part so no machining required, so then a Mocal stat plate and end cover is what I used.

Think I will just get that male to male adaptor about 8 quid
Thank you
The Yamaha part new is over £30!
Just had a bit of a thought. To those running a stat plate, wouldn't the engine have far to much oil in until the stat opens bearing in mind we overfill the r1s anyway?
Obviously the longer the lines and the larger the cooler the bigger the problem.
Just a thought I might be well off and overthinking haha
No.
The oil doesn't drain back from the cooler into the sump, just like it doesn't drain back from the galleries or filter.
