You need a machine which will drop down to 30 amps, preferably 25 amps for car bodywork, the cheaper end of the market tend to run 40 amps minimum.

You may need to rethink your budget to get a suitable machine.

I used a clarke 90 amp mig for years, was excellent little machine until it died mid-weld (transformer from basic testing) but did last 9 years, restored 3 cars and loads of other stuff. Worked very well on bodywork, happily recommend. Avoid sip/cosmo and probably a few others, wire feeds can be a nightmare.

Clarke, Clarke,Clarke....

For your money a 90amp MIG will fix most cars, I had one years ago and used it welding my Land Rover chassis, something it managed without any issues. ie dumb irons, outriggers etc.

Bits to fix them are easy to get/cheap from machinemart.

clarke 100e mig welder (pick up or post) on eBay (end time 02-Feb-11 21:28:07 GMT)

I sold my Clarke 90, and bought a SIP 160 - kak kak kak....

Sold the SIP and now have a Clarke 195, only £275 on eclart , and its made welding a pleasure again.
