Tiger Avon - disks or drums?
Very seriously interested in getting an Avon kit, and currently talking to Jim and Sue about the specification I want.
looking at a 1.8 zetec with twin Webers, disk brakes all round, full windscreen, single roll bar, full weather gear, black powder coated chassis,
cycle wings (not clamshells) and toying with quick rack, floor mounted peddles.
Unfortunately the prices seem to have increased somewhat since I last talked numbers with them over Christmas. In a bid to lower the cost a bit
I'm just looking at the different 'extras' I really wanted but perhaps could be left off.
Rear disks? would you recommend these? I realise that drums should be sufficient especially considering the weight of the car, but I figure in a car
like this the stopping potential is even more important than the power of the engine. Or if I got drums initially, how hard would it be to convert to
disks once the car is fully built and on the road?
and while I have your attention is anyone running Tiger's quick rack or wish they were? is this worth the extra money?
Any other options in particular that people would advise getting, or not, from Tiger?

im building an avon and im fitting drums to the rear. as far as I know the change to discs is fairly simple. all you need is the modified upright
and of course the actual brake unit, as far as the front goes as im using discs its very easy to fit so i imagine the rear is the same. might be nice
to buy drums and then actually modify it yourself to discs so you feel that you have had some contribution to the build if i understand you correctly
that your buying it built.
things might change but for the time being im not going to bother with a windscreen and all that because its more to worry about when building the
kit.
im using a 2litre zetec with 45 webbers (although I only have the engine so far, no webbers, ecu etc..) and the performance will be about 5 seconds
0-60 if that helps as a 1.8 i'd imagine wont be that much different.
im a web developer and dont know jack about cars so if I can build a kitcar as far as I have im sure you can change the brakes if you choose to.

I've not got a Tiger, but I wanted discs purely because of looks - Drums are MORE than up to the task of stopping these cars.
The quickrack - I thought I'd got one, paid for one and received one from my manufacturer, but I didn't receive one......
I wish I did, it is very annoying not having one

Thanks for the info, and no sorry, I'm building it, but as the car is intended to be my daily driver (yes I know this is insane ) I intend to
work pretty much full time on building the car to get it finished in as little time as possible, although not rushing it. Because it shouldn't
take too long (like the length of a piece of string) I intend to buy a comprehensive kit so I'll have almost everything I need from the word
go.
I think in the future I'll also get an aeroscreen for track days but because I need to be able to use the weather gear a windscreen is a
must!
I think the 1.8 is meant to take another half second over the 2ltr but that's pretty damn rapid if you ask me.
steve, thanks for the comment on the rack, I do imagine these cars could be a little frustrating with standard rack, little cockpit space and small
wheel. I think I may have to just bite the bullet regarding all these options.

you might come in handy! as im building bit by bit and could do with some help, the one thing to say about that is it will cost you a fair bit more
than ebaying and forums for second bits although time/ money its your choice and at least you'll have all the right bits.
i reckon if i was a full-timer on it it would see take years to do figuring out what bits go where but if your fairly handy you could do it within a
year i guess..
p.s. get yourself a good toolkit and it makes it a lot easier if you dont already.

Haha, well I'll keep you informed how things go, and if (hopefully when) I overtake you I'll be happy to help, until then I may need
you!
I've done nothing like this before but I'm fairly good generally with building stuff and my Dad has always done lots of work on his cars
in the past, and he reckons it should be fairly simple overall for me to do, just time consuming.
From what I've been reading here over the last month or so my biggest concern has become the SVA and time wasted trying to get these things
legal!

How much is the Quick rack ?
Rally design do a NEW 2.9:1 rack (inbetween standard and quick) for under £60

cheers, I figure there really is no point worrying about the SVA till I come to it, but hopefully there will not be the weeks and weeks just waiting
for a test which some people seem to have endured.
the tiger quick rack is only £60 but can't remember ratio off the top of my head

Brakes
Don't worry about drum brakes.
I race an Avon and it has more tham enough stopping power.
It does have HI-Spec four pot calipers on the front using green stuff pads though.
As a daily driver, standard braskes will be fine. I drove many miles in Tigers Avon demo car, including all day around Donnington Park track, no
worries at the old hair pin or any other corner.

I would doubt if there is very little if anything in the price between a 1.8 or 2L zetec so why not have the extra 10bhp?? You also need to remember
there are 2 versions of the 1.8 with a HP version (different cam etc).
As for carbs - forget Weber's and go for a nice set of bike carbs with a Bogg Bros manifold and a megajolt. Chester Sportscars (Tiger North West
agent) do a kit that will save you several hundred pounds over Tiger's Webcon kit price and its also much nicer to drive.
As mentioned - drums are more than up to stopping a 550kg car - as Steve mentioned they just look nicer.

Sounds like me doing the Avon demo at Brands if that avon was fuly race prepped.
This year I'm doing Total KitCar Live at Snet' also Donny show.
