Zetec 2.0i Silvertop - Effective/Cost effective ways to improve performance?

Hi All

My Avon is fitted with a '97 Ford Zetec 2.0 fuel injected Silvertop. I would consider it is a fairly standard setup, with really only a few enhancements (such as new pistons, reground the crank etc).

I'm starting to research ways to improve performance of the engine in a 'reasonably' cost effective way (sub £1,000 ideally), and am looking for any ideas or feedback on experiences you have had in doing this.

After reading through a handful of blogs and reports, the sort of things that are suggested include adding a Weber Alpha kit (such as from Burton), re-mapping the ECU, changing injectors, going down the bike throttle body route, and much more in many combinations of the above.

Have you had any success or failures in any of these areas?

I appreciate any thoughts or innovative ideas on which route to explore further.

Many thanks, Ed

there is some good info on the Burton's web site regarding options, what manifold & ECU are you currently running?
my thoughts would be, motorbike throttle bodies and programmable ECU first, followed up by ported head and cams depending on funds

One of the most cost effective ways of improving performance may be replacing the engine with an ST170. I believe people are getting around 200bhp on a standard engine with bike TBs.

Do you need to meet specific emissions standards at future MOT's which was say relevant to a a 97 Ford Zetec 2.0 silvertop? if not then revise my previous comments and go with motorbike carbs and ignition only ECU.
