But in comparison the quality is crap. This is professional gear designed for a purpose.

Anyway, thanks James

I'm just trying to help others out but if you want me to edit my post I will do

Im not doubting the quality. The maplins kit can be made better using some basic filtering components but is more involved and still not as high quality.

My mate builds knock monitors specifically for the 3SGTE Toyota engines. The 3SGTE uses a gated knock sensor and probably won't work with other after market knock monitors.

The advantage of a gated sensor on the Toyota is that it is looking for the frequency that knock occurs on that specific engine so you get less noise. if you own a GT4 or turbo MR2 or use the engine then this is a brilliant bit of kit! You can reach Chris here

For a real locost alternative, flatten about 30mm of a 100mm piece 15 mm copper tube. Drill a hole through the flat piece and bolt it to the head of your engine somewhere where it will hear the knock. Push some fuel pipe (or other thick walled flexible tube) on to the copper pipe long enough to reach to inside the car and rig to an old pair of ear defenders. Hey presto, very effective det cans for a fiver!
