xfail lives up to its name

What I thought was a wheel bearing noise turns out to be the rear diff in the xtrail, which the garage tell me is £1600 for a rebuild or £3k for a new replacement. Which sucks as the car is worth £3k at best.

Bearing in mind that it's usually (as in, just about always) FWD, could I just remove the rear drive-shafts (and perhaps the prop as well, if necessary)?

Don't know if it would work on the Nissan but it does on other 4WD vehicles

Depends whether it's a manual 4 wheel drive select I would guess. Doesn't the xtrail select 4 wheel drive automatically in slippery conditions? If so I would imagine removing diffs/props would throw up some problems.

It's got 2wd, auto-select mode and 4wd. I think in 2wd it can go to 4wd while the front wheels are slipping as you say (though, that said, I have never seen the light on the dash come on to say this is happening), but then in that case it would just end up spinning up the rear diff, effectively cutting power to the front wheels. So pretty harmless I reckon.

I'll keep an eye on EBay for a replacement diff though.

Second hand diff from a breakers?
If you disconnect it will cause all sorts of issues traction control/electronic stability control!

It's standard practice on Frelandiers with knackered centre vicious couplings.

Undo the troublesome bits and just drive the thing.

Mate of mine had an XTrail for his missus. About the only time it went off road was when he parked 2 wheels on a grass verge on a slight uphill slope to take the dog for a walk on a wet day, came back and couldnt get the bloody thing off the grass despite switching it into "4-wheel drive", so not sure quite how effective it is.

Needless to say it was traded in for a Toureg. My sister has an XTrail and loves it but it's never seen anything but Tarmac.

As above not sure if the diff is electronically controlled and what the ecu will say if disconnected.

Yeah, garage declined to disconnect it in the end, so secondhand diff it is. Shouldn't be overly expensive to find or get fitted, happily.
