Hold a single sheet of newspaper over the fireplace hole, it will think it's outside and cannot see anything to be scared of so will and fly
through it.

Stupid question, is it dead?
Fire fixes most things so I would go with that idea!!

Not dead, although I removed cast iron fireplace and got up into chimney, grabbed hold of the said pigeon, and after a brief struggle and a loss of
feathers (from the bird), the pigeon has been evicted. Much to the amusement of my 8 year old daughter, who took lots of photos and giggled at daddy
wrestling a rather angry pigeon.
The end.....

Happy ending thanks to you. Respect for going to so much trouble. Reminded of Family Guy fighting that giant chicken

Lets hope it wasn't a homing pigeon, or it'll be back.

My route course analysis says you need to get it out and put a chimney cap....

Here you go..
Looking up the chimney to see the pigeons bum...
Description
After failing to reach, remove fire place and attack!!

Fail, result in hand full of feather but no bird...
Description
Next, right I'm going in....Result, one rather surprised and angry bird...

Description
After much laughing and me being a hero in the eyes of my daughter, clear out the feathers from fireplace, quick hoover, replace fire. Relax......

Having found two dead pigeons up a chimney once, I concluded that they can't fly vertically back up them? Good on you for saving it anyway.
