Zetec

Finally got my Zetec started today.

Couple of questions

I am getting a fair amount of dark smoke out of it. Is this normal when the heads been off and the hydraulic valves have been emptied?

Secondly I may have an air lock in the cooling systems as the there does not seem to be any water circulating.

Been reluctant to leave it idling on the drive for too long.

Thanks

Ian

Oveall a great relief.

mine takes a fair amount of time to warm up enough for the stat to open and fully circulate, have you got a bypass to send some water round the engine before the stat opens ? if so this should be heating up nicely. Big 32mm pipe that exits thermo house to top of rad wont heat up til the stat is open, smaller 19mm hose next to it should get hot 1st.

Not sure re smoke,if your running TB's or injectors it might be the setting.

Smoke?

is it black or blue?

Black is petrol, Ie your engine is too rich.

Blue is oil.

Guys,

Thanks

The smoke is black not blue. How do I change the mixture with the webber alpha kit. Or is it this rich due to the engine being cold.

The engine is an escort model for 92. How can I tell regarding the water pump flow?

Thanks

Ian

Is it a 1.8 zetec?

The 1.8 escort water pump goes round the same way as the crank whereas the 2.0 out of a Mondeo turns the opposite way.

Not sure on the alpha system but i think its a alpha only dealer you will need to goto as the chip has the be removed to reprogram it. Yes there is extra fuel during warm up so firstly check you got water flow and get the engine up to temp and maybe the smoke will clear if not try adjusting the fuel pressure down a bit if you have an adjustable regulator
