Hi everyone, Bit of a newbie here. Looking at a BEC locost build and been wondering about engines.
From what I can see the choices are endless, but most commonly zzr1100's gsxr1000, and so on. Has anyone done anything with a shaft drive bike engine or is it a case of won't fit?
Reverse also worries me. I know an electric reverse can be fitted, which sounds easy enough to fabricate, sprockets and a starter motor style.
Anything is possible when you have the tools and a bit of knowledge. I guess I'm just looking at idea's to get a feel for things.

Anyway, any help is appreciated, along with idea's.

The BEC brigade will furnish you with a proper answer, but if you are going bec - make a suitable reverse high on your list of priorities.

The new IVA which replaces the outgoing SVA states it needs to reverse!

My ST1100 is a shaft drive engine. Not classically BEC in terms of RPM range ("only" 8.5k as standard) but it fits just fine and gives a good slug of torque...... Main issues are relative lack of power (100Bhp at the wheels) and engine height (ie to get it under the bonnet (even with a scoop) the sump hangs pretty low......

Compact, lightweight 1298cc, DOHC, 16-valve, liquid-cooled in-line four-cylinder engine delivers massive power and torque (145 hp @ 8000 RPM and 99 ft.-lbs. of torque @ 7000 RPM, respectively) for an unequaled spread of muscle over a wide RPM range.

Obviously this keeps the engine across the chassis as in the bike, and, I understand there is a shaft that runs across the engine and someone somewhere is converting it to 4wd. Its got a 5 speed box which means wider stringer gears that will help in the BEC setup. May be cheapas well, been around since 2005 and not a popular bec install. Its the one I would go for.

A mate of mine has one of these bikes and it is proper quick, he can stay with the lads on their R1's up to 150mph.
