I am using Cortina uprights with Girling calipers on my Locost. I have new pads, one piece springs and anti-squeal shims Problem is the build has taken so long I cannot work out how the one piece wire springs fit the caliper. I have tried but they dont look right and I cannot work it out. I assume the springs are designed to release the pads from the disc. My Haynes manual is no good as it appears to show a different spring or springs. Anyone got a diagram or photo they could post?

Sorry I can’t find a photo but they should be shown in the Haynes manual. The curled ends clip under the pins and the middle lip over the edge of the pad but they do not retract the pads as it is the piston seal returning to its original shape once you have released the pedal pressure which does that. They are there to simply stop the pads rattling. Use a small blob of copper grease between the anti squeal shim and the pads back face, this reduces the chances of screeching brakes and helps them cool down.

The springs are only to stop the pads rattling in the caliper.

The fraction of a mm clearance between disc and the pads is provided purely by the elasticty of the caliper's main rubber seal pulling the piston back.
