Pre SVA pics.......
iiyama - 1/2/09 at 03:20 PM

Well Ive run out of time as its on Tuesday. Had tomorrow pencilled in for a day off but have got to work now, (self employment is great!!!).

There are a few issues that I'm sure will crop up, emmissions being one, but at least I get another 6 months to sort it!!!

omega0684 - 1/2/09 at 03:26 PM

LOOKS AWESOME!

you need to put side repeaters on the side of the scuttle ideally.

Nice

adithorp - 1/2/09 at 04:07 PM

Side repeaters on the mirrors won't pass the angles of visability tast.

Looks very nice though.

iiyama - 1/2/09 at 04:19 PM

I know.....one of the other issues!!!

mad-butcher - 1/2/09 at 04:30 PM

good luck
reflectors

Mark G - 1/2/09 at 04:54 PM

I think you might need to ditch the bottle of threadlock between the master cylinders, Other than that it looks nice.

Wicked wheels btw.

caber - 1/2/09 at 05:39 PM

Are your rear wings on the right way round? mine have the angled bit at the front and the straight bit at the back.

I was also ailed as my rear lights mounted onthe wings were not deemed to be facing backwards as they weren't vertical, inspectors vary on interpretation of this.

Good luck

caber

iiyama - 1/2/09 at 06:06 PM

Reflectors are in the passenger seat at the moment!

Thread lock left as a clue for SVA man!! (not!) Wheels were becoming a little common in Dax circles after I bought em so I bought some bike wheel vinyl trim to stamp a little originality!!

Rear wings will only fit one way so yup! They're on the right way. Re veticality I thought that only pertained to the fog light??? If not then that'll be another issue to fix!

Nice car, i have always liked the Dax MC's.

iiyama - 1/2/09 at 08:56 PM

Thanks bud!

Actually having read this thread again Omega answered the question already!!!

iiyama - 5/2/09 at 08:33 AM

Need to fit some side repeaters peeps, unsure as to where to put them. Can I fit them low on the scuttle sides??

adithorp - 5/2/09 at 01:31 PM

Min height is 350mm. They have to be visible from the rear and to the side. Standing in line with the side of the car at the back move out 5' and they have to be visable untill you're 60' out.

iiyama - 5/2/09 at 01:44 PM

Isnt there a caveat though for sevenesque vehicles because of the rear wings??

apart from the headlights, that is one NICE looking car.

Congratulations, love the detailing. On question - will you be able to see anything out of the side mirrors with the roll cage being there?

iiyama - 2/3/09 at 12:27 PM

Dont leave that hanging in the air! Whats wrong with the lights??

Got full SVA visibility with the mirrors. QUite pleased because it was the one of the things I was concerened about!

Kriss - 2/3/09 at 12:54 PM

looking great dude, very capable car too looking by the spec.

I think the problem with the lights is, quite simply put.....

they suck! only think I hate on the car! get some nicer ones come sva "fallen off" time!

iiyama - 2/3/09 at 01:21 PM

LOL

Open to suggestions then!

INDY BIRD - 2/3/09 at 07:00 PM

Those lights are a dax trade mark what makes the car so distinctive,

still probably not the most aero dynamic of lights,

got them on my dax also, but may change them for the small dominator headlights we will see,

still car looks the dogs danglies in my book nice build

good luck again

iiyama - 16/3/09 at 08:49 AM

Jason Fletcher - 16/3/09 at 09:07 PM

Best of luck for tomorrow and if you don't pass with that car then the rest of us have no chance!

Just one thing though, do you think the regulator will be ok mounted on carbon (no heatsink) with no airflow?

Jason

David Jenkins - 16/3/09 at 09:11 PM

I suggest that you move the bottle of Loctite too!

iiyama - 17/3/09 at 06:51 AM

Thanks guys.

Bottle of Loctite removed to the SVA toolbox! As for the reg, dunno! It was about the only place I could put it. If it fry's I guess I'll know the answer!

iiyama - 17/3/09 at 04:03 PM

All internal radii passed other then one small area in the passenger footwell. Easily rectified. Stuff that I though would be sticky, ie Passenger harness draped over the cross bar, Busa clocks, SPA clocks and switches wernt even mentioned. He seemed to take note of the SVA bars and didnt check for radii below these bars, only above. Had a few small fails here but again nothing to worry about. The front indicators fitted to the SVA bars are 25mm to low. Easily rectified but Dax have got their measurements wrong somewhere!

Failed on Emmisions and noise, both are a bit of a worry as is the fact that it failed on lack of rear visibility with the mirrors Ive fitted. This in the main is due to the cross bar and the SIP bars. Got a few ideas of how to sort this. Wouldnt let me bugger about with fuel pressure or map to try and get through emmisions.

Passed all the brakes, self centering etc then failed the rear calipers as another tester pointed out the make and the fact there was history. Bummer! Ive got a pair of standard Sierra rear calipers that Ill bung on to pass.

He allowed me to set the headlight aim and calibrate the speedo.

Failed the radius of the lower mounting point of the SIP, the one and only bolt! Didnt think they tested for radii on the side of the car? He didnt check for a fuel pipe restrictor, didnt ask to see proof that all the oil and fuel lines were compliant.

Overall not to bad I guess. There is no doubt the guy was/is a nob and had a complete sense of humor bypass. The only thing he said all day that made me feel pretty good was that the car was one of the best examples he'd seen.

Hopefully Ill get the to do list tomorrow and get on it for a retest within the next month.

So then guys, pointers and ideas as to how to reduce noise. Reading was quite a bit over at 103.5db

INDY BIRD - 17/3/09 at 06:32 PM

Hi

Sorry to hear you didnt pass,

what exhaust are you running to get 103 that cant be the dax exhaust surely there normally quite good around 100 db,

any pics as cant dee from the ones posted,

sounds like where unlucky on somethings as has no issues with of the things you pointed out,

yes the front indicators are to low before the day i raised the ride height as headlights where to low also,

still things that are fixable im sure suprised about the mirrors though???

good luck

iiyama - 17/3/09 at 08:11 PM

Exhaust is a second hand item bought for those MOT and SVA occasions. 'Proper' can is made by Simpson and is probably quieter but has no CAT.

Headlight height was fine, he was more then happy!

Mirrors were marginal and to be honest I was a little pi$$ed that he didnt let them through. Angle of visibility is good but to the letter of the law they are a fail. Laugh is that I have far more blind spots on my Transit!

Im more concerened about the noise then anything else. Not sure if its engine noise or resonance thats the problem. Maybe its both.

INDY BIRD - 17/3/09 at 08:39 PM

is the can re - packable item,

any pics of it etc,

option you could do if it has a perferated tube is take this out bolt a db killer in half way up the pipe and replace the tube in exhaust, that way he can still get his probe far enogh up the exhaust to get emmissions readings on the lamba etc,

pics would help if you have any,

also have a db killer you can borrow if that helps

took around 4db of my readings so worked

cheers
sean

iiyama - 17/3/09 at 09:01 PM

It was repackable, but as it was leaking we welded it Have thought about cutting it back open and making it longer. Havent got any pics to hand, Ill try and ppost some tomorrow.

Simpson set up is this:-

But as I say, no cat. If it had passed emmisions today then I'd have bolted this one back on as its definatly quieter.
