R1 shiftlight setting?
nitram38 - 17/2/09 at 06:28 AM

Now the electrics on the MotaLeira are working I am starting to play with settings on the veypor dash.
I've worked out the speedo setting by finding out the number of revolutions per mile for my toyo tyres (899) and finding out how many mm in a mile and dividing by 899 to give my tyre average circumference.
I want to set the shift light.
What is a good starting point for an 05 R1 injection?

Pick a nice round number, 10,000?
How ya finding setting the Veypor, little bit fiddly eh?
Good when it's done though..

Not adjusted it fully but it is another gadget!

How many mm in a mile such a handy small number there! My push bikes speedo simply require me to push it 4m forward then press a button and its very accurate too

On the stock 2003 R1 engine, the optimal shifts are:

11500
11100
10500
10500
10600

If you can send me the gear ratios and a dyno chart I can work these out for you.

If you want to do it yourself, you need to plot geared torque (torque x gear ratio) against prop RPM (NOT engine RPM) for each gear.

You will then have 6 lines, representing the geared torque in each gear. If they don't intersect (which they often don't on non-performance road cars) then your shift point is simply your redline.

If they do intersect, then your shift point is the RPM at the intersection - which varies by gear.

If you can only set a single shift point on your dash, then choose and average (or the 1st->2nd shift if you are doing a lot of drag racing I suppose)

Martin

Claimed peak horsepower is 180bhp at 12,500 rpm.
Claimed peak torque is 81.2 ft lb at 10,500 rpm.
Redline is at 13,750 rpm

A bit confused!
So around 12K?

I don't think it's that an exact science! A lot depends on how quickly you actually change when the light comes on!

I'd put it at 12k and see how it feels. Mine is set to 12k. You can then try it and tweak it if necessary.

The more important thing for me is the position of the rev limiters but, as you're using a stock ECU, this won't be a problem.

The veypor has a high and low limit.
I have set the low to 11k and the high to 12k. 11k is where the light just starts to come on and 12k is full brightness.
Boy has this got some settings!
I am trying to change the gears to 6 as only 5 listed. Looking for the setting to change this, but my brain is a bit fried.

theres a big difference between the 03 & 05. The 05 was the first 1000 to rev that high. Also those figures would be crank not rear wheel. Ive owned both bikes & found my 55reg R1 an animal!

For clarity, I was talking about the 2005! Same advice would not be OK for the earlier engines!
