As it says really, getting close to the stage when I need to change the filter and fill my 5VY up.

What oil do you suggest,
Make,
Spec,
Fully / semi synthetic

How much will I need?

i use yamalube, fully synthetic for the r1...i believe its 2.9 litres, about 3.1 with filter change.
you get the yamalube from yamaha dealers, i was told its pretty much the best for the job.

Yamlube4 or
sae 20w/40 se above 5'c
sae 3w/30 se below 15'c

3.8lt dry fill
2.9lt without filter (why would you?)
3.1lt with filter

I used Valvoline Synpower 4T 10w/40

Check the level with the engine warm. Switch off, wait a few min's and then check. It will read low when running.

If you've got a baffle plate then you need to add about 0.25lt overfill on top of this.

Thanks chaps, main reasons for the question was a mate tried 3 or 4 different oils in his blade, first 3 led to clutch slip before he got one which worked well. All were of similar spec so I was looking for a proven make.
I've just had the sump of to fit the baffle so I suppose I'll be getting close to the dry fill quantity, where abouts does +0.25lt bring you on the window?

Done a quick google and yamalube4 appears to be for jet ski's etc??

theres a yamalube for everything they make...

I got the Yamalube4 from the yamaha workshop manual so it's right for the R1, but might also be used in jetskis.

With the over-fill you'll be right at the top of the glass. The "wait a few minutes" in the manual is a bit vague for my liking; When you switch off it'll be at the bottom, give it a 3mins and it's right, wait 10 mins and it's high (when running you'll be off the bottom).
I found by trial and error that mine takes more like 0.5lt over-fill; At that it's just visable on the bottom of the glass after idling, any more and I get oil in the catch tank when on track, any less and the level light comes on at sustained high revs (they do that anyway when cold).
