can i damage my engine without rolling road set up

i have a zx10 injection engine with a power commander fitted,my question is as the fueling and air have been messed around with with the air sock and 421 exhaust am i in danger of damaging it with not having it set up on a rolling road.

I'm thinking the same, i've just changed my engine for a 2.0l zetec on zx6r bike carbs with a megajolt injection kit but i won't thrash it till its been down to bogg brothers on Tuesday. For the sake of £80 to setup the carbs put it on a rolling road...

I would have said YES.

Running it with the mixture and timing wrongly set.... It can overheat, warp the head. You can melt and hole the pistons, and in doing so can possibly damage the block and head. Thus it is possible to total your engine. (OK thats a worst case scenario)

Dont spoil the ship for a Ha'peth of Tar.

Dont do it.... You know it makes sense to get it set up properly.

Wost case yes, if it's running a very weak mixture and you thrash it!
RR would be good investment, but you can get a good indication by checking the colour of your plugs to see if its WAY weak or WAY rich

Out of interest how much does it cost do get a rolling road tune up done?

I'm going to be running a pinto and they're so cheap to pick up it might be cheaper for me to put a new engine in then get it rr'd?

In theory - yes, but not much unless you're changing the engine / exhaust in a major way.

Our Rolling Road Session cost us thick end of £150 (3 years ago). It ended up not needing THAT much work but it's reassuring to know that we have the MAP specific to our engine, Air Filter and Exhaust set-up.

I have spoken to PDQ about having my car/power commander set up on their rolling road. £75 + VAT an hour and they reckon it will take 3hrs. I suppose this isn't too bad when you think about the cost of the rolling road itself and the equipment to go with it plus the labour charge and the knowledge for the bloke doing it. A few hundred quid spent on this is also cheaper than a new engine aswell.
I am going to have mine setup at some point, just need to fill my piggy bank.

Overfuelling = bore wash = good bye engine quite quickly.
Underfueling = overheating = good bye engine quite quickly.
Incorrect Ignition timing = detonation = good bye engine quite qucikly.

Properly set up fueling and ignition is vital.

ive wondered this too. being rich is only a problem over a longer time as if its so rich it just wont rev. too lean and its bad, but you might hear it pinking in this case.

im doing it the bodge way, an lc1 AFR meter and the laptop and many stops to update the map. im getting there slowly, i have found my zx12 is very rich (10.9) on light throttle and a little rich on WOT (12.2). you could do it this way, but its about the same cost to set up as a rolling road and only worked for me as i had the lc1 handy.
